    decking treatment

We have a raised decking area, supported on tannalised 8" diameter posts, about 2m off the ground at the greatest height (it's on a slope). The deck planks are looking a bit grey and dry and I noticed are cracking at the ends. There seems to be a wide range of timber preservatives, oils etc...

    Boiler pilot won't stay lit

OK, or CH/HW boiler is a slightly long in the tooth Glow-worm Fuelsaver 25-40, which has been working fine until this morning, when the pilot was found to be out. Tried to relight it, and it relit fine, nice strong flame. Held the knob in for 30 secs, let go and poof, out it went. Tried several...

42" LCD TV; 'broken window' lines on screen

On new Year's day I had an accident with tghe TV, when a heavy piece of wood fell against it. It looked OK (plastic screen) but whn switched on, there's a black square with a series of black 'spider's web' lines radiating from it like a cracked window. These are slowly spreading, becoming wider...

    cylinder not heating up

Hi john. Good news. My jiggling about must have freed something up. the water's heating now! Think maybe the stat's on its way out though. Cheers and happy new year!

    cylinder not heating up

There is a motorised valve, replaced just last year. The stat didn't click, no. Just turned off the CH to see if the motorised valve switches across. The cylinder seems to have an immersion in the back top area but that isn't doin anything. Maybe it's an old one, disconnected?

    cylinder not heating up

New Year's Eve, of all days! Anyway, the problem arose this afternoon. The downstairs boiler is working fine, roaring away, and the central heating is also working fine. However, the hot water, which has been on for three hours now, is stone cold. Went up to check the cylinder and it's cold. I...

    Noisy hot water pipes/system

It's still doing it. I can hear it roaring away upstairs now. When the cold weather is over and we don't use the central heating it'll be every day (it doesn't make the noise when the heating comes on (maybe something to do with the diverter valve?)

    Noisy hot water pipes/system

Any ideas on this? I'd like to know if it's something I can fix before it wakes me up tomorrow. :?

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

No, I'm not actually from "Steers". I'm in Sheffield! The quote isn't itemised so I'm not sure if it includes certification. I'm assuming so.

    Noisy hot water pipes/system

Hi. Our hot water is an old fashioned cylinder (1st floor airing cupboard) supplied by a boiler down on the ground floor. It comes on at 6am, followed by the central heating which comes on at 6.30. This morning I was woken up by the noise of the HW coming on. There was a roaring...

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

Hi again. The electrician came on Monday, in the middle of a blizzard! I'd removed everything except the two sockets and the light fitting. He looked at the house end, was bemused by the consumer unit and supply set up, but accepted that it had been in since before I moved in (it has - one...

    Screen shake!

Hi. The speakers are where they always were, although they're a bit faulty in themselves. I recently fiddled with the graphic card seating in an attempt to investigate another problem (spontaneous shut-down, now solved), so maybe it's that? My partner had to reset the clock recently as well.

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

Hi everyone. The pump is 60W not 60A. Just a typo! Two sockets, and a light fitting. That's all. A 4mm cable should be OK for that according to the calculator linked to in a previous post. And I'm not DIYing it. I have a professional spark coming on Monday to look at it. All he'll find...

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

I do take it seriously. That's why I cam on here really. I totally respect your advice, all of you. You're the pros. I'll take your advice. The load is mainly the pond pump at 60A and the lights. I'll only plug stuff into the sockets occasionally. The cable depth: hmmm, well, it leaves the...

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

It's just less than 50m (about 45). It's intended to power 2 lights (one a ceiling striplight, the other a bayonet fitting above a bench), a pond pump (60W constant operation) and provide power to 2 sockets, which will be used occasionally to plug such things as hedge trimmers, lawnmowers or...

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

If I remember right, the armoured cable is 4mm. Wouldn't that be OK? It would be pretty much impossible to dig up again. If it was no good, I'd have to bury a new cable on a different line.

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

    No it's live1 to live2, neutral1 to neutral2 . My diagram's not very good.

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

OK I'll take it all out and get an estimate from a pro. As the main cable is already in from the house to the shed, hopefully the rest won't be too expensive.

Wiring up my shed - power there but nothing works - why?

I just missed out the earths for clarity. Everything is earthed and the shed is wooden. Sigh. I didn't think taking power to a shed was notifiable work. Obviously it is from what you've said. At the moment it's disconnected so not a danger. "What do you mean by "sort of"? It either is or...
