    plastering ceilings

Cut the lathes back to the nearest joist and stick some noggins in. Cut plasterboard a couple of mm smaller than size of patch and screw to noggins / joists. Scrim and skim. Regards Fred

    rendering cellar ceiling

Hi Finch, What's the construction of the ceiling? Is it boards on joists or concrete? If it's boards then I don't fancy your chances of the boards staying on with the weight of the render. If however it's a concrete ceiling then a good coat of Thistle Bond It or Wickes (Knauf) Paster...

    dust sheets........

For plastic dust sheeting I use DPM. Got a few rolls cheap which is how I can justify using the stuff. It's thick as hell so not suitable for every job but is incredibly strong so good for floors as it won't tear or slide about when I pull my platform around on it. Regards Fred

    B&Q

Aye, B&Q and Scewfix are indeed both part of the Kingfisher group but are separate companies and operate independently of each other, not only in terms of the roducts sold and the prices charged but also throughout the entire supply chain so the buyers for B&Q buy separately from those of...

    cars

Had a Volvo V70 T5 until a couple of months ago. Absolutely loved it. The spec, I called it the everything you can imagine spec. I had it remapped from 240bhp to 310bhp! Awesome car but didn't look fast so took a lot of people by surprise. The downside was fuel consumption, insurance and road...

    chimney breast

Actually, you got any nice framed prints you can hang over the effected area? Doesn't fix it, hides it nicely though!

    Skimming ceilings

No problem ModernHouse. The flooring's less of a problem than the walls to be honest. Any masking is a pain in the bum but you get used to sheeting up floors as a matter of course although I always worry when plastering in a house where the flooring is to be retained in case I damage it and...

    chimney breast

Not that I can think of if there's nothing sound to fill - you'll probably have to cut out the affected area and either fit new lathes or attach some studding to which you can attach plasterboard. Unless of course you overboard the entire area but that will still need skimming. regards...

    Skimming ceilings

Crafty, That's cheap! ModernHouse - where are you in the country? Is the surface sound? As a rough guide, I'd charge somewhere in the region of £7 - £10 per square metre depending on a few factors such as size of each ceiling, how high the ceilings are (probably only 2.4m if the...

Removing pencil marks from satin and matt paint

Pencil eraser? It'll probably leave a smudge so while you're removing the bulk of the lead, you're spreading a bit around. Then I guess just try removing with a damp cloth. regards Fred

    how soon......

You need to wait until it's dry. What background was skimmed? Fresh boards or existing plasterwork? If existing, are they stud walls (plasterboard) or solid plaster down to the brick? It should really only take a maximum of three days depending on conditions (temperature, ventilation etc)...

    bathroom advice needed please

Hi Seabird, Remove all loose plaster (which it seems you've already done). I wouldn't really start brushing away at the surface because you'll find that you're continually brushing away sand until there's no more plaster on the wall! As long as the plaster is sound then leave it well...

Aye, but it's Vista Basic crafty. Basic doesn't need much power really although it will be slower than if running XP. Regards Fred

    Diana

I didn't watch it. I'm bored of it. I've been bored of it for nearly ten years. Let's face it, we're never going to know what really happened, IF indeed anything other than a terrible accident actually happened yet people still continue to try and determine what happened. What I really...

    Detecting domestic in wall wiring.

By using a wiring detector. Beware though, they're not always reliable. The cables should only really run horizontally or vertically from the electrical accessories so anywhere outside of these zones should be OK. I say should though, it's always worth double checking. If still unsure but...

    Metal backing boxes

LOL, true indeed. I have worked live before but generally do isolate before doing anything. However, for the sake of completeness I usually provide a flying earth. Regards Fred

    shower cable

You'll probably need to give a bit more info such as the length of the cable run and under what conditions (clipped to the wall, in conduit / trunking, plastered over, run under thermal insulation etc). A spark will then be able to advise more accurately. regards Fred

    sorry... but toilet seats

Yowser! Like Softus, I'm squeamish too but also have no will power so just had to see what it was all about. Kinda regretting that now! Like a couple of others on here, I sit down too. They way I see it, most of my pants are button fly so need to be completely undone anyway so may as well go...
