    Insulation effectivness of these two...

It's an old solid stone walled house, edge of the window frame meets the stone wall, the frame is about 30mm but I don't want anything coming out as far as the opening. There's 22mm insulated plasterboard, but that's 9.5mm plasterboard and only 12.5mm of polystyrene insulation, so not much. I...

    Insulation effectivness of these two...

Not sure, probably 35mm nailable plugs (will screw them in rather than hammer). Perhaps a better option is a tiny bit of adhesive at corners of the foil insulation to hold it in place, then board over with plasterboard fixed with the plugs? Would this compress it too much? I've only got about...

    Insulation effectivness of these two...

Would it lose much of its effectiveness if compressed slightly? Was thinking of attaching it via spray contact adhesive, then plasterboard over top to finish. If doing this would reduce effectiveness would doubling it up (I'll have more than enough left over) counter this?

    Insulation effectivness of these two...

This stuff claims to be as effective at insulating as 65mm mineral wool... Airtec foil. Is it fair to assume it would be a better insulator than polystyrene boards such as these 25mm boards? It's for internal wall insulation, specifically around window reveals where space is tight. The foil...

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

That is quite cheap, thanks. I'll have a go with the 12mm I've got, if that goes ok I'll pick up one of those 16mm bits to wide the hole. Any reason I can't aim for a mortar joint between slate blocks, rather through a block? Would certainly make life easier!

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Thanks, will do. It'll be covered with a louvre vent anyway, plus it's an East facing gable end with another house fairly close, so quite well sheltered. Regarding drilling, the walls are made of very hard solid slate blocks and are 12 inches thick, just wondering if it's even possible for me...

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Thanks, this is what I wanted to do as I don't want internal vents that are unsightly and let out heat. The walls are solid slate blocks, not bricks, so won't be able to fit airbricks as such, so was wondering if a few holes drilled through covered by a louvre vent plate would suffice?

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Stack is closed off in the loft, can't find any air movement. I'm definitely going to ventilate to be on safe side. Question is can I ventilate from external wall only, or must add ventilation on internal wall too?

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Thanks, this was done I think about 10 years ago, long before I owned the place, so not sure how much involvement building had. I've seen arguments for/against venting, but wanted to play it safe. So would vents fitted to the outside of flue too & bottom be ok, rather than fitting them inside?

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Yeah there's hardly any air movement, so I was going to drill some holes in exterior wall high up and put a vent, along with one at the bottom so air can enter from outside, travel up & out again to keep it ventilated. If I put one of those balloons up there won't it stop airflow and cause...

    Venting old chimney stack/flues

Hi Property I bought has a fireplace in lounge and another in the bedroom with flues up to a chimney stack that has been dropped below roofline. As far as I can tell the chimney is not ventilated at the top where it's been dropped. The fireplaces are still open so warm air from the house is...

    What's this bit on window??

Thanks, yes got it figured now. There's a plastic flat head key, slots in at bottom and pulls down, a latch flips out. Cheers!

    What's this bit on window??

Hi Got uPVC sash windows, they all have this on both sides but I've no idea what it is?

90mm shower waste a little slow to drain

Yep. I'm not a fan of stuff like that, but as I say it previously worked fine so I kept it in place and was just going to box it in so it looked better, but as it doesn't work with the new tray/shower I'll be replacing it with proper pipe.

90mm shower waste a little slow to drain

Thanks. Yes I'm not really happy with the waste system, it's what was there when I put the new shower & tray in, i think the old shower was a lot weaker with flow rate so it handled it ok so I assumed it would handle this & didn't replace it.

90mm shower waste a little slow to drain

Hi Looking for a way to improve drain flow rate for a shower tray. When shower is on full it's really struggling. With the chrome cap on it doesn't drain fast enough and water will fill & spill over sides. Without cap it just about copes.. just. Was going to fit a water aerator to the shower to...

    Adjusting composite door

Will do, but wanted to know if it was a simple adjustment I could do before going through the hassle of calling them out, arranging a date etc.

125mm inline fan with 100mm ducting

Ok, thanks. I'll see what it's like once fitted and swap to 125mm later if it's an issue. Cheers.

125mm inline fan with 100mm ducting

I'll have a flick through that article, but I'll fit it expecting some loss in performance. I'm going to be lazy and just use existing 100mm ducting and fingers crossed it'll suffice for the job. Ducting us cheap enough, so worse case scenario I'll have to pick some up and replace the 100mm...
