Drill hole from attic to outside wall

It sounds like you have a hipped roof. If you want to take the aerial into the loft you would probably need to take it through the facia/soffit boards. When you are in the loft, can you see daylight at the edges of the attic? If you can see light it’ll be just a case of feeding the cable...

Drill hole from attic to outside wall

Typically, you are not going to have walls in your attic unless you have a gable end (apex at the end of your house). The walls stop at the eaves. Also, when drilling a hole all the way through you are always best drilling from the exterior - inwards. If you drill from the inside the drill...

    Gable to gable roof detail

I see, so i didn't think about the lead saddle, didn't think i'd need it as it's well under the larger roof although that would make sense now. Thank you noseall.

    Gable to gable roof detail

Hi. I am nearly ready to start the roof on my extension and just wanted to get the installation clear in my head. I'm fairly confident about installing the wall plate, trusses, strapping and even things like membrane, battens etc. The part i'm trying to get my head around is the detail where...

Also agree with this; complacency has to be the biggest cause of accidents. Familiarity breeds contempt!

    Trench Question

Unless you've already had the ground checked independantly you'd normal dig to the 1m depth assuming normal foundations. Depending on what you find, 1m may be enough. If you need deeper, worry then.

Ensuite - leaving bedroom with no window

I would assume the ensuite would need obscure glass and building control often restrict openings on bathrooms which may affect your fire escape option. You would also likely need some kind of mechanical ventilation for the ensuite. Removal of any wall sockets. As above.... Might make resale...

    Trench Question

Depending on when their extension was built, it'll likely have deepish foundations anyway; you may only need to go as deep as theirs which shouldn't cause any issues.

battens minimum size for plasterboard wall

I would build the stud wall and then plywood the floor within these walls, that way it can be replaced or lifted easier in future if needed. 63mm x 38mm is probably the minimum to gain a wall of decent rigidity. Ensure a good fixing for the head and sill plate and i'd space at 400mm centres...

    Trench Question

If you mean because of getting the digger around the back, you can get diggers that go through a doorway. Without a digger, you're stuck with handheld breakers, spades and if the ground is tough a pick-mattock.

When you said this I had to look it up! Nice! :D:LOL:

    DIY Two Storey Extension

Installing the floor joists I had to find the level of the existing house floor which was perhaps easier due to the already installed lintels which support the current first floor. Even so, I drilled the first hole on the far right to try and see the existing joists. From this I could ensure...

    DIY Two Storey Extension

Rebuild Lintel Bearing Wall I had to prop the already in-situ lintels with props and then remove the "rubble/makeshift wall". Most of the wall under lintel pulled away without much effort. Started building that side of the wall. Built the block wall under the lintels and then the...

    Overbearing brickwork between floors

I'm considering the soldiers and cill. I think if there is one thing i've learnt doing this extension, it's that design is very important; bit late now though, so whilst good design is best, correction as you go along has to be better than wrong when finished!

    Overbearing brickwork between floors

Well that was brutally honest! How do you make a 70's box a design masterpiece? The answer is probably... you don't!

    Overbearing brickwork between floors

The existing house has a timber frame where the cladding is, not too sure about the insulation arrangements. Do you reckon carry on with the brickwork, scrap the render idea on the extension?

    Overbearing brickwork between floors

I hate the cladding, it's gotta go but not sure i could have it bricked up. Someone on the street has removed and rendered theirs, looks a lot better.
