    DIY Two Storey Extension

Demolition of the Garage I totally underestimated how difficult and expensive the demolition was going to be. I didn't use any plant machinery, just a few basic tools; a sledgehammer, drill, reciprocating saw. The wife and kids chipped in a little to whack the smaller walls with the...

    DIY Two Storey Extension

Hi I have posted plenty of posts asking for help over the last 10 months so thought I should start the build progress thread. I started the site prep April 2018 and the actual dig and construction in July 2018. I'm still only up to first floor although this is kind of a weekends and evenings...

Hi Do you normally continue the cavity wall insulation up into the gable ends? Is there any point? Cheers, Chris

Access after installing first floor joists and boards

Hi I am going to be installing the first floor joists and boards on my house extension and have a question about access! After the joists are installed I intended to install the floor t&g boards on top which is all great, although how would I gain access to my new floor when it's...

    Lateral support straps for joists

I do have a masonry gable end (two actually - L Shaped extension!) although the joists are not running parallel to this, so this wouldn't need strapping to the joists would it?

    Lateral support straps for joists

I'm installing the first floor joists. I'll need to strap them to the parallel walls as per my regs below. "Provide lateral restraint where joists run parallel to walls, floors are to be strapped to walls with 1000mm x 30mm x 5mm galvanised mild steel straps or other approved in compliance with...

    Lateral support straps for joists

Hi I am nearly at first floor height for my extension and I have made a hole to check the existing floor level. The bottom of the existing floor joists sit level to the bottom of the hole I made and the top of the joists level to the purple line in the picture. Regs say: Restraint straps must...

    Cyclists.

It's laughable that people still go on about tax for cyclists, do people not understand the term "zero emissions"? So it's okay for your super fast and heavy Tesla to not pay tax but cyclists should? Insurance is in direct proportion to the damage that can be done so compared to a...

Knife Crime ....why the puss footing about ?

Never understood the reasoning with legalising drugs. They'll still be an underworld where you can get them cheaper than the official channels, people will still get hooked on them and people will still steal to pay for their habit! In fact, if the drugs were legal, they'd be taxed, more...

    What is your hobby?

Tough choice these days the way money is, but I reckon converting an old Porsche to electric with ya dad will be a memory and talking point that he'll never forget. My dad is useless and if i turned up with 50k and gave it to me, it wouldn't impress me as much as if he'd of made an effort to do...

Can you put lining paper directly over hardwool?

Do you mean hardwall, the undercoat plaster? If so then no, you’ll need to skim the hardwall plaster with a finishing plaster (multi finish).

    Core drilling with clutch-less drill

 - make sure you've got a clutch on the drill, crucial for core drilling. I lost count the number of times the clutch kicked in when i last drilled a 6" hole! I'd say most SDS drills would have it, check the make and model online if you're not sure.

    Additional planning permission question

Just an update. Planning permission accepted for the first floor extension so happy with that :). Even though the permission was for a first floor extension (additional to the accepted two storey/part single plan), the council still requested another flood risk assessment, even though one was...

    Self-levelling - patches

I suppose if it’s all level apart from a few low bits, then how can you do the whole floor? I’d think it’ll be fine doing the low bits, you’re tiling it anyway, so you won’t see it.

Should I fit Cavity Trays at DPC level?

You only need cavity trays at DPC level if you’re installing a radon/gas barrier. The trays slope any captured moisture in the cavity to the outer leaf weep holes. Generally, a normal cavity will continue down past DPC level to your cavity fill (225mm below DPC).

    Plasterboard or MDF?

I've seen some glass like paint finishes on MDF so I guess you could get a good finish. I suppose it would be stronger, but I wouldn't personally use MDF above a cooker, all that steam rising, MDF doesn't cope with damp very well so it could expand. Plasterboard would be fine if the frame was...

    Tapeing plasterboard question

He means don't use the tapered side, that way all the joins butt against each other, then you'd use the mesh tape over all the joins and skim the whole ceiling. The mesh helps to stop cracking at the joins.

    well that was clever :)

I saw a guy do this last year... brand new BMW! They shut off the section and went looking, don't know how long it took to find them!
