    DIY Combi Install

Hi, I am going to be installing central heating in my new house and just want to check if my proposals make sense. I'm going to get a Corgi in for a chat beforehand also to make sure they're happy with what I propose and are happy to commission the boiler. I'll do it in a list of what I...

    TV booster off lighting circuit

To me it sounds like you have wired the booster into a permanent live and a switched live. Reason being, when the light is off the booster / splitter is getting it's live from the permanent live, but it's neutral is flowing through the bulb. When the light is on this 'neutral' becomes live and...

    Dim Houses lights

However Series actually means each bulb in turn, i.e. phase--->lamp--->lamp--->lamp--->Neutral. You're thinking Parallel. Phase ---------------------------------- |lamp |lamp |lamp Neutral---------------------------------

Should my presure relief valve really be leaking that much ?

To me it sounds as though you're describing the condensate drain. If it's been happening any time you use HW or CH and you have never needed to re-pressurise the system. I'm not a plumber but shouldn't a condensate drain be directed into a soil stack or a soakaway??

Strip light connected to socket loop

Curve I think the OP did say that the supply is coming from a standard 13a plug so overloading the cable is not really an issue (unless the universal replacement fuse has been used i.e. a nail!) The setup isn't ideal, but again not dangerous provided the cable to the shed has sufficient...

HELP - Boiler Problems - SIME Friendly Format 80e

Hi, I've just had BG Homecare out cuz of no hot water and he's refurbished the diverter valve. Now hot water does work, but I'm convinced it isn't as hot as it used to be. Also the heating is turned off but the rads still get hot when I have hot taps running for a while. Does this...

    electric oven

Chrism2 how can you make such a harsh judgmental statement when you clearly state yourself that you are not an expert and have no clear knowledge of the situation. In a lot of cases a built-in single oven is quite capable of being supplied by a standard 13A plug top. This is pretty standard...

Really confused with phone / CAT5 bobbins

Ok to patch a POTS line to a Cat5 structured cabling system you use the 1st two pairs on the Cat 5 cable, These are specifically pins 4&5 and 1&2 4&5 should correspond to Blue/White, White/Blue respectively 1&2 should correspond to Orange/White, White/Orange respectively (These are the...

    garage Electrics

Hi Keith, Have you got a job lot of 6mm T&E? You seem to want to use it everywhere! Ok, from the CU, you should use 3 core SWA (armoured cable) for the underground run; it would be much easier than trying to run sealed conduit. Put it on a 32A MCB (there's a debate whether or not it...

    Insulating inside roof, ventilation needed???

Hi, I want to insulate the inside of my roof under the roof tiles so I can board oyut the loft for storage and not have the loft at sub-zero temperatures! At the moment the house has no ventilation (that I can see), no ridge vents, no soffit vents etc. Am I correct in assuming I will...

Manual / Automatic Overide of Security Light with PIR

The way you have it wired is correct. To override the light simply interupt the phase for a brief time (1 sec) i.e. switch it off and on. The PIR has solid state circuitry that "detects" the interuption of the supply and latches the relay on. Hope this helps.

Sime Friendly Format 80e DHW Problems

Thanks for your reply, is it possible that draining the system to change the rad showed this problem up, or made it worse? I take it that to replace this it is take the diverter valve out and then the number of screws on the circly thingy hold the diaphram in place?

Sime Friendly Format 80e DHW Problems

Hi, I have inherited the above boiler with the house I bought. All was fine till recently, after I moved a rad in the bathroom (hence draining system) the heating works fine in all rads, but DHW seems to be fine if the Roomstat is calling for heat. But if the Roomstat isn't calling for...

    Reciprocating Saw for Firewood?

Hi, I use an 18v reciprocating saw for cutting just about everything! The blades last quite a while providing you use quality blades. The battery seems to last a while cutting a fair bit of stuff. I'd say two batteries are a must as they don't gradually go, they suddenly lose power. The...
