Failing retaining wall - total or part-rebuild?

Would help to have a shot longer away. If there is no immediate danger then maybe wait and see? If not it looksl iek the bottom half could possibly stay. You may be able to reuse the bricks - it depends on how much labour time will be needed to clean the old bricks (if they have mortar...

    Marking thermalites

Hi All I have cause to go round a house with bare thermalite style grey blocks and make loads of markings. My thinking was to use chalk. It would then all be covered up with plasterboard afterwards. Is there anything better or is chalk the logical choice? I don't think chalk would...

    Floorboards vs Chipboard

It is for supply and fit. I am having a large job done on the joists and need a new floor - the 2 prices I have been given - 1 for chipboard and 1 for floorboards there is a 500ish overall difference. I spose you could argue it might take an extra day so maybe 150-200 is labour cost in...

    Floorboards vs Chipboard

The chippie who I had round was very anti chipboard and pro tongue and groove. He wasn't too positive or negative about plywood sheets but seemed to just go on the basis that tongue and groove was the best.

    Floorboards vs Chipboard

Hi Just to bump this up Does anyone know the cost differential between chipboard and floorboards? Lets say you have a room 4m by 4m. I potentially have to reboard my first floor (no walls) - whilst I cans ee that chipboard will be quicker it will only be amrginally quicker as the...

    Plaster or plasterboard?

Everyman and his dog willg vie you a different answer. Plasterboard is easier to do so most builders/plasterers will push it onto you. That said, I think a decent fit to the wall with lots of dots of adhesive is better than they used to do it. I am pro wet plaster. the 3 primary reasons I...

What is the difference between mortar and render?

Hi What would be your recommended mix for brick layign mortar and render? In my situation I would probably knock up some render. Preusmably if bits of render have fall off I can just trowel some new into the gaps (it should hold).

What is the difference between mortar and render?

I have some repairs to do in my house - some blocks need pointing and also some internal rendering needs fixing. As far as I can work out mortar between blocks and bricks is 3:1 or 4:1 sand and cement with plasticiser Render is also the same as far as I can work out. So can I make one...

    Nylon nuts

I bought a pack of M8's - 7.50 odd i nScrewfix for 100. Turns out they are too small. The nut I have says 8 on it so I assumed it was M8! Looked online on how to work out nut size - nightmare.

    Nylon nuts

So basically you can use them instead of normal nuts just to ensure the nut won't come off? They are quite expensive compared to normal nuts. The bots I have - not sure if they are stainless steel - the oens otuside anyway.

    Nylon nuts

Doesn't seem to be a great deal about nylon nuts on discussion forums. Is the gist that they are better to use over normal nuts when you need to ensure the nut won't come loose over time? I have a job at my house at the moment where some joists are being extended to sit on a new block wall...

    Anchor bolt nut working loose

well as the nut unwinds the post starts coming loose because I think the bit inside the wall gets smaller as the nut is undone - when i tightened the nut back up it expands again and the post is ocne again held firmly. So I need to stop the nut from unwinding.

    Anchor bolt nut working loose

I have fitted a fence post to a brick wall using acnhor bolts A bit like in the pic below. Only difference is that the thread on mine is much longer so the anchor part is within the wall and the thread goes all the way through the fence post and has a nut and washer at the front of the...
