Is it worth running 22mm from 20mm mains?

Hello I have 20mm MDPE mains on an outdoor stopcock about 8m from the indoor stopcock which is 15mm. It then goes to 22mm into the boiler and 15mm to the nearby downstairs sink. CH is all 15mm but the hot and cold to the upstairs is 22mm. A timed bucket fill suggests a flow of 15l per...

Brick wall behind cupboards, what would you do?

Hello In my utility room I’ve pulled out some old cupboards and am hacking off the mix of 1960s wallpaper/tiles/crumbling plaster back to brick. The plan is to put mostly tall units there which will leave a small gap at the top. Is good practice to plaster or plasterboard it, and if so...

Outdoor lights and sockets - same or separate circuits?

Thanks for everyone’s input, it’s an interesting read. My post is just me thinking ahead and wanting to understand what might be involved. I have an electrican who’ll be doing other notifiable work so I guess he’ll decide.

Outdoor lights and sockets - same or separate circuits?

Thanks, I thought that might be the case, makes sense. Just reading up a bit more. If the spur is protected by a 13A FCU could 1.5mm SWA be used, rather than 2.5mm, even if it goes to sockets?

Outdoor lights and sockets - same or separate circuits?

    (y) Most of it can be clipped to the wall but there's a section that could run under some flower beds. If running in conduit was okay, I could get it in position ready for the cable to be fed through.

Outdoor lights and sockets - same or separate circuits?

Hello I won't be doing the work myself, just adding to an ever growing list of things for an electrician to do. I'd like to have outdoor sockets and lighting and I have an RCD protected ring circuit in the utility room which only has the washing machine and tumble dryer on it, no other...

Which point of a powered bathroom cabinet do you measure for wetroom zoning?

Yes, that does make sense. A bog standard cabinet, no bells or whistles seems like the easy way out... Thanks for everyone's replies. It's probably straightforward if you're doing it every day but it seems to be a bit of a minefield!

Which point of a powered bathroom cabinet do you measure for wetroom zoning?

Thanks. So just so I'm understand correctly, extensions of existing circuits are not notifiable, but new circuits are i.e. ones that have a new connection to the CU. But because it's in a Zone, the Zone rules apply. Looking at this, Competent Person Scheme am I reading it right ? That if...

Which point of a powered bathroom cabinet do you measure for wetroom zoning?

Thanks all. So if rated IP44 doesn’t that apply to all elements? Hadn’t looked at it like that but I can see the sense of it. No, so I understand that makes it notifiable. That’s fine. I just don’t want to buy it only for the electrician to say he can’t fit it.

Which point of a powered bathroom cabinet do you measure for wetroom zoning?

Hello I'm looking at getting a bathroom cabinet with a demister and internal shaving socket that's rated IP44. I know it's all notifiable but I don't want to waste money on a powered one if I can't use it. It would be in a 1.8m square wetroom, no screen, no shower tray, just tiles. I...

Ah thank you. So I'll tell them to keep an eye on it for first signs of trouble (y)

Is there/should there be a tundish here?

Hello I recently came across the word 'tundish', which I'd never heard before, so looked it up to see what it was. Coincidentally a relative has just had a vented hot water cylinder replaced by an unvented cylinder so I asked if they had one. They weren't sure so sent a photo. Is it there /...

    Showerlay Wiper anyone?

Hello Anyone ever used a Showerlay Wiper wetroom former from WetRoomsDesign? Not to be confused with Marmox Showerlay. It's of compressed XPS foam. Within the well known brands I've been unable to find one that ticks all the boxes, and this is the only one that does. - 22mm depth, 800...

Regs re new internal staircase to loft when there's already an external staircase exit.

Thanks for your reply stevie888, it's encouraging. I could get separation by putting a door on the landing at the bottom of the staircase , and could enclose the staircase leading up. When it reaches loft level I'd just like a balustrade to keep an open feel. What would put it out of reach...

Adding underfloor heating to existing circuit? Share switch?

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. I intend to be very careful about the positioning, that’s why I’m thinking about loose cable on a grid - maybe run the cables one notch closer together in traffic areas. I’ve had it in a kitchen before - the fitter told me he’d not laid it under the...

Regs re new internal staircase to loft when there's already an external staircase exit.

Hello I've got a two storey house which has a loft conversion that's currently only accessible via an external metal staircase and in an ideal world I'd like to access it internally. I've looked at pitch and headroom, but what I'm not clear about is fire regs/boxing in. The ideal position...

30 x 30 tile in wetroom former - best layout?

Hello I plan to use 20cm x 20cm floor tiles over a wetroom former - like these: I see there are various former types - could anyone advise on the one that would be most appropriate for this kind of tile - I don't want anything that draws the eye so I think that means avoiding ones that have...

Adding underfloor heating to existing circuit? Share switch?

Thanks ericmark. I wasn't expecting to heat the room with it (why I was going for the 100w product) but rather 1) to take the edge off when in bare feet and 2) to help speed up the drying of the wet area after using a squeegee blade. This might elicit criticism but when it's really cold I...

Adding underfloor heating to existing circuit? Share switch?

Thanks for the replies. The maximum from the downlights would be 4 x 4.7W. I use LED lighting but even if a subsequent owner put 3x150W old style bulbs in the other rooms (why would you?) it would surely still be within capacity? It's an ensuite, (there's a separate circuit for the main...

Adding underfloor heating to existing circuit? Share switch?

Hello When my ensuite gets renovated I'd like to add 100W electric underfloor heating. The room is 4 sq m so am I right in thinking the load is 400W? The lighting circuit that serves the bathroom includes the landing and two bedroom lights as well as the extractor fan and electric towel...
