    Eco 7 Immersion heater problems

I agree. Old & faulty thermostats often develop short circuits and often you can smell electrical burning type odor from them, however the currents involved are usually too small to trip the MCB. My guess based on information provided would be wiring/isolator switch. You need to get testing...

Oops I ordered the wrong size shower trap

Hi all, I just received a McAlpine shower trap model ST90CPB-P-HP2 and ignorantly assumed when it said 50mm 'water seal' that meant the plug hole size, but its designed for a 90mm hole. I'm wondering whether its worth trying to enlarge the hole to fit this because we've had tons of problems...

Fixing to a mixed material wall

If there is no gap between the plasterboard and underlying material then use masonry fixings of increased length. Don't worry about it will be fine :)

help with insulation in sloping roof

Ignore most of these replies. Do your Science and maths and put the best insulating material into the roof that it can possibly accommodate while still not infringing on the room space - check out U-Values etc. Synthetic materials can offer the best insulation but are bad for the environment...

    Cold bedroom above garage. Options?

You probably aren't loosing much heat due to it being above a garage. You don't give many details but I am guessing its a newer house if it has an integral garage. Newer houses will actually have better insulation between a bedroom and an integral garage below due to building regulations...

To have a garage or not have a garage?

Yes, don't do any work, just make it look pretty. If you extend it you will not get your money back on the sale. You will get different types of buyers: some will have a man who wants to use it as a DIY place (sorry for sexism but true), someone else may want to convert to a bedroom. Some...

    Toilet Seat Replacement

I would really advise to try and find the exact same make and model of toilet seat that was originally on it to replace it with - it looks like a good design like you see in a lot of hotels and commercial settings for a reason - that design is robust. I believe it's a 'CONCEALED HINGE' toilet...

Damp/cold under stairs cupboard split level house (pictures)

Hi, I added pictures. Not very good ones because the lens is very narrow angle. Thanks for the suggestions so far. The main part of the cupboard is plasterboarded but the bit under the stairs is bare block work. I could add some insulation over them. I like the idea about a greenhouse...

Water spil on Honeywell 2 port motorised valve. Now sparks come out.

If you identify yourself as the type of bad plumber I have had lots of experience with then just don't reply. I am asking for advice from the broad range of people who post on an internet forum. Some of them may be plumbers and some DIYers. I suspect that some of plumbers who post and give...

Water spil on Honeywell 2 port motorised valve. Now sparks come out.

Ok, I just assumed that the manual lever was meant to be at the top. Maybe its meant to be on the bottom. If my valve is the wrong way up then I can be more sympathetic to the guy.

Water spil on Honeywell 2 port motorised valve. Now sparks come out.

The HW valve in question is installed with the manual lever at the top (would have thought this was standard). The CH valve is what I would call 'upsidedown'. I can see how the upsidedown valve is more protected from water. I will try hairdryer. I think an experienced plumber should have...
