    Bloody Noise Complaints

Assuming your work was done at a reasonable time, i think anything after 10am on a Sunday is okay, then i don't think anyone has a valid complaint....if the council intend to make an issue of it i'd be tempted to give as good as i get and inundate them with 'several' noise complaints a...

    Sealing gutters

I'm working for a local authority carrying out small works repairs to their housing stock... With this summers weather there has been loads of call outs to leaking gutters, most of which have been blocked fallpipes ...easy fix, but some have been leaking from running unions, corner pieces...

best way to mix small amounts of mortar?

Woody is right.... But by the sound of what your doing get to Travis Perkins or similar and buy a plastic mixing bath....worth their weight in gold as when not in use they become a great place to store tools/materials etc. Whatever your mix 4-1 compo, 5 or 6-1 concrete etc etc, gauge the...

    supporting wall or not?

Since posting that comment i re-read the OP's original, and as i mentioned a few posts up if what he/she says is correct then possibly nothing, but the bathroom/bedroom wall above has weight and must be carried somewhere....strange that a ground floor wall is inches away, yet apparently not...

    supporting wall or not?

As a thought & if what you say is correct. You should be able to take up a few floor boards in the bedroom and find the top of the lower wall and with a torch look along it and see if anything is touching/being supported by the wall. If this is so then it's the first i've known like that...

    supporting wall or not?

Make an opening without a UB and you'll soon find out what it's supporting...believe me, it's a supporting wall. Maybe not the roof, but it carries weight.

    supporting wall or not?

Yes a structural engineer will tell you all you need to know as long as you pay him/her. I think i'm on the correct wall...between the kitchen and the backroom, sometimes there was a serving hatch between the two. Above is the main bedroom and the bathroom, with a 4 inch wall between them...

My First Ubeam - selected profile looks a bit flimsy

I did the calcs a different way but came out with the same conclusion. 3m x 178mm x 102mm UB. But am happy to bow to better judgement.

    supporting wall or not?

If you want to be 100% ring building control, tell them what you want to do, ask what they have to say on the matter and act accordingly. If it's the wall i'm thinking of i did the same in our gaff and have done many others since. We started doing these jobs with pad stones and concrete...

    2 semi's converted into 1 - Gas / Electric / Water ?

Interesting question which sounds simple but after a little thought becomes the nightmare you mention. Taking a kind of middle ground & starting with water (and dont forget, that charge covers sewage as well.....are you intending to use the toilets in both parts of the house?) So, is it...

    Makita v DeWalt

Update, the DeWalt kit is going fine...the other day i had reason to drill through a sofit while hanging off a ladder, the surveyor thought it would be plastic or wood. Turned out to be 5 inch of concrete...i jest not. The hammer drill smashed through it with a 10mm bit not once, but 12...

    Makita v DeWalt

I've had a bit of a re-think and now wonder if i might be better getting a 2 piece kit to start with and build up over time as i find which tools i need/use the most. The best compromise i've found re price and modern spec equipment is the following DeWalt drill/impact driver...

    Makita v DeWalt

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post an opinion/advice here. I'm still of the mind to go with the Makita kit, in the past i've used Makita alot and was always happy enough with it. The newer DeWalt kit that i linked above looks pretty good but more money and in fairness the job i'll...
