    "hot bitumen" ?

I've just posted about using a vapour control layer on a flat roof ( thanks to chapper for explaining how it all fits together) The spec says to use hot bitumen over the VCL. I remember hiring a tar boiler and melting bitumen but that was a long time ago . In these days of super adhesives do...

"vapour control layer nailed to the deck"

Thank you . That makes things clearer. Is the bitumen heated in a tar boiler and poured over the VCL ? And that bonds the Thermaroof so I don't need mechanical fixing of the insulation?

"vapour control layer nailed to the deck"

The plans for my extension specify "[Thermaroof] insulation to be bonded to 18mm plywood with vapour control layer nailed to the deck sealed with hot bitumen." I can't quite understand what gets fixed to what, how, and in what order! :?: Anyone help?

how to tie timber frame to wall?

My extension wall will be fairly tight to my neighbour's land. I had expected to construct the timber frame and then clad it in concrete block, using wall ties in the ususal manner. However he has refused access to his land so I will have to build the concrete wall first, from my side, and then...

fixing kingspan to a flat roof deck

The drawings for my extension flat roof specify 90mm and 80mm of Kingspan TR27 to be fixed to an 18mm plywood deck. What do I use to secure the two thicknesses? Thanks

    switching extractor fan

According to my architect the BCO will want to see one. I have a fan in a downstairs WC and that switches with the light ( and has timer too). The room for the washing machine has obviously not the same need!

    switching extractor fan

I am fitting an extractor to a utility room to be part F compliant. Does it need to be switched along with the light or can it just be switched as a stand alone unit?

Combi boiler + hot water tank?

Time to think about replacing my boiler and I am thinking that I would like the convenience of immediate hot water in the kitchen but keeping the luxury of my power shower in the bathroom - ie fit a hot water tank to supply it. Can I just use the CH side of the combi to supply the rads and an...

    updated regulations

I think these posts have solved my puzzlement. A combination of the addition of a clip to the regs, and an engineer only too willing to make the obvious point that spare parts could theoretically become unavailable at some future time I think you are a being a bit hard calling my friend...

    updated regulations

The boiler was installed in a new build 15 years ago- wall mounted on the exterior kitchen wall. The flue comprises a very short vertical section a 90 elbow and then straight through the wall, It seems to my admittedly inexpert eye as simple - and effective - as could be imagined. The more I...

    updated regulations

Now that rings a bell . My friend told me he said that! Doesn't sound ethical or oven legal. And it is definitely a Suprima!

    updated regulations

I'll see what I can do with the pics, as much out of curiosity as anything else:) Don't want to spend money on an independent engineer. She is paying SG enough money every month and am wondering if a phone call to their customer care dept might be an option.

    updated regulations

Thanks for your replies. They were sort of what I expected but what should advise my friend? She is not very happy with the "just use it ; it'll be OK really" situation. Should she a) Throw the paper work in the bin and forget it? b) Get the flue upgraded ( and presumably pay handsomely for the...

    updated regulations

A friend has a Potterton SupaPrima boiler which was fitted when the house was new- about 15 years. She has a service contract with Scottish Gas and at the last service she was told that because of updated regulations the flu was no longer acceptable. He told her "unofficially" that the boiler...
