The real problem with the EU is whose in control.

Definitely on the cards but a veto by anyone of the 28 member states can scupper it whereas many of our politicians of practically all shades have said they are in favour. That's a worry for an out vote but I'm hoping they won't be that stupid. No rather I was saying the outers could really make...

    painting doors and skirting

Gloss does show up imperfections more than a satin or eggshell finish and so requires a better preparation so with the comment about your previous owner doing little or no prepping and painting it with satin that probably answers your own question. That said I do tend to think a lower sheen...

Repairing Wooden Window Frames and Installing DG Units

Done it myself . On my own house it was more a case of replacing full height windows with a smaller dg unit and a wall but I have repaired wooden windows prior to the installation of units for others. To be fair all double glazed units are made to measure so that cost isn't really an issue. You...

The real problem with the EU is whose in control.

I've seen and heard it quite a few times on the tv , the comment about being allowed to control our own country , having our own destiny in our hands and all that , sovereignty to sound a bit more educated. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes but I do wonder if that call will be expanded upon...

    how to turn oak black

In my experience yes. Green or semi green oak will react much more with lime or vinegar than seasoned oak.

Curved wall base and wood floor

Are you concerned about keeping the detail? If not it could be quite possible to form a box skirting over it without the work of removing. That would give you cover for the edge of the flooring.

Curved wall base and wood floor

I've not come across your situation before although I've worked on a fair few places that were almost unintentionally so out of square. I'm assuming you must currently have a solid masonry floor. As I see it the easiest method is to leave a gap and fill that gap with a cork strip. One like this...

Do you think we've been to the moon ?

No , perfectly logical . America sees itself as much greater than anyone else on the planet and it has an almost irrational fear of anyone else having the lead on them . Yes Russia did build the Tsar bomb but the US just had to build more bombs than the Soviets . Even now they spend more than...

Do you think we've been to the moon ?

Yes quite agree, many ifs and buts. Try replacing "moon landing " with " the most powerful nuclear weapons" and it would seem unlikely that the US would be happy with the Russians having a lead.

Do you think we've been to the moon ?

Not my theory , just one of the many that can be found on the tinterweb . I was merely pointing out a flaw. Either way the Russians did abandon a planned manned moon program shortly after the American landings. In my mind I can't see the yanks faking it all to push the Soviets into what would...

Do you think we've been to the moon ?

I've seen in the conspiracies the idea that it was all a deception to help bankrupt the Soviet Union , an idea that seemed plausible when presented. Create a fake space race for your enemies to throw huge sums at . Now if we assume that is correct and the moon landings were fake and filmed in a...

    Hypothetical question about insurance

I can remember a customer of mine describing a situation which involved a tile coming off a roof and hitting a car. There wasn't any building work involved it simply became detached in high winds . Unfortunately I can't recall whether it was hers or the neighbours car it hit but she told me that...

    Labour are , Tories are......

Picked this up on another forum and it might be going round Facebook too. Type into the google search labour are , liberals are , or SNP are and the auto complete gives you a very similar result , but try typing in Tories are or conservatives and it seems to be switched off. The cynical...

    how to turn oak black

Normally use distilled vinegar , the clear sort . Regular vinegar , the sort you put on your chips , sometimes has caramel added for colour so better to start with something simple . Either way a bottle of distilled vinegar is always a good thing to keep as it has so many other uses around the home.

How easy for an amateur to repair/replace this lock?

Agreed , it'll be a straight swop just replacing the cylinder. You will have to remove the lock on the inside to give you access to the screws but there will be no need to touch the mounting plate screwed to the inside of the door. The finger pull is simply a separate piece that the cylinder...

How easy for an amateur to repair/replace this lock?

There's a good chance it would be a straight swop without the need for anything but the tiniest bit of work. If it's possible to use an alternative lock or even have someone stay there it might even bean idea to remove the lock and take it with you when you go to get a replacement. Two small...
