Whole house audio installation. help please?

Plus one. Out of interest, I tried walking about outside to see how far I could pick up my own G-standard signal. The answer is about 100 feet, via several solid walls and 2 fences. Not bad, I thought. Carrying on, I found that one neighbour's network (they have helpfully set the SSID as...

    Cement over old timber frame.

That's just criminal!!! How are you going to repair it: like-for-like to original standard, or rip out the damage and repair with modern alternatives? Many of the older buildings in this country have been systematically ruined over the years by a combination of people attempting to...

    Johny Cash the murderer

I can honestly say that I have never ever heard someone express distaste for Johnny Cash before. I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just rare for someone to say they don't much care for his music. "Personal Jesus" was another great cover by the man in black.

the boat that guy, shouldn't be building

I caught one episode of that programme; I find it hard to trust anyone with sideburns that big, especially when they appear to be doing an impression of what the offspring of Dr Brian Cox and Jamie Oliver would be like, with a bit of "What would Fred Dibnah have said in this situation?" thrown...

Anyone ever had a false positive testing for dead with...

Well, my house was fully-rewired in 1998 according to the lying g*ts I bought it from, and much of the under-floor wiring is lead-sheathed. So, I'd say your cables must be about 13 years old :P However, when I did some research I found two groups of loonies, one thinks lead-sheathed VIR was...

    How many women tackle DIY?

Is that another name for a pummace stone? I want to say "Good on you!" but that just sounds condescending in the context! Let's face it, actual DIY ability seldom has any influence over one's decision to do DIY, otherwise the forums here wouldn't be full of threads and photos...

small project in ex council flat

With respect to your plan to lift the carpet and paint the floor: Firstly, you may find there are covenants that prevent you from doing this, soft coverings such as carpet are generally preferred in flats to prevent noise. The good news, however, is that concrete floors in flats are a...

can i lock onto Astra satalite in greece

Yes. You will be looking at a 4m dish to receive a usable signal however. You're basically right on the side-lobes there. You will really be under the influence of the weather, a mere shower and you might have no telly. An alternative would be to get one of the internet re-broadcasters...

    Boggled by ariel!!!

I was going to suggest it might be related to "The Big Switchover", but according to freeview.co.uk you've had digital telly since at least 1970: http://www.freeview.co.uk/Switchover/The-Channel-Islands Are you sure all TVs are connected to the same aerial system? If so, it would seem...

Air vent in bedroom 1930's semi

I'm reviving a 2-month old thread here, apologies to anyone who detests old threads raising... I have a house from the 1920s, and the house was built with many more vents than you would see on a modern house... The house originally had 5 fireplaces, and there is an original vent in every room...

    what do regs say about...

Well, if you ever want some incredibly perished lead-sheathed VIR cable, there is a LOT of it left in my house (which was supposedly rewired in 1998).   Sounds like an interesting project you have there, can you post any pictures?

    Architrave round sockets?

Unfortunately because of the profile of the panels, the key issue is filling in the gaps... See the shoddy surface-mount-through-the-panel electrics currently in place: So, I was hoping by fitting architrave around galvanised back boxes I could fill such gaps with wood and filler! With...

    HD and health

Sound? Dolby digital broadcasts have greater dynamic range, you'll be getting bigger booms and bangs. Have you tried it with other things? Maybe you get a headache when the game is being played badly!

    Architrave round sockets?

It's more the gap between panelling and socket that concerns me... if I put some sort of surround behind the socket I've got a flat surface for plate to align to. If anyone is considering panelling, make sure the flat areas are big enough for sockets to mount! Cheers

    Architrave round sockets?

Can you mount sockets on a non-fireproof material? I realise there is enough T&G out there and wallpaper to ensure such a reg would be massively flouted, but thought I'd ask nonetheless. I have MDF panelling in one room, the design of this panelling doesn't have room to ensure plug sockets...

    what do regs say about...

Cable is double-insulated, plus presumably the twist keeps it together as sheath would. The question nagging in my mind: was cable such as this ever surface mounted? I'm aware of the "wires strung between ceramic insulators" approach, but I thought after that they went to wooden trunking...

Whole house audio installation. help please?

3 things, that may seem obvious but DO get overlooked: 1) Determine a central point for your equipment rack, much easier if all the cables come out at the same place 2) Label each cable at BOTH ends as you install it. 3) Make sure you have enough room for all your cables along your runs...

    Demise of the TV engineer

It's a shame, it's happening (or happened) with most things... I've had time-served motor mechanics complaining that they're basically just fitters nowadays. Back in the day they would have stripped down a starter motor or carburettor and cleaned/refurbed it. Now they just fit a new motor or...
