    Checking an immersion heater.

Thanks for the contributions guys - all makes interesting reading. I went to mums today and drained the tank - took 20 minutes - and removed the immersion. This is what I found One point I would like to clarify. As I understand it, from the comments, the thermostat has a pair of...

    Checking an immersion heater.

Thanks guys. Your views/comments seem confirm my thoughts that the element could/should have been checked/changed before/as well as just changing the thermostat. It is also beyond me why the manager at the company stated "our guys are not trained to drain tanks" when all it needed was the...

    Checking an immersion heater.

I'm not sure of the size of the company - it's one local to whee my mother lives and they have a card up on the board in her block of flats (it's private but restricted to over 60's). I'm going to go down to see her tomorrow to investigate further and try and sort out the problem. I'll run...

    Checking an immersion heater.

Thanks 333. That was the info I was looking for. I do feel that today customer service appears to have just disintegrated (not just in the electrical world). I would have expected a professional company to have explained the situation much like you have in your response, particularly...

    Checking an immersion heater.

So, surely this should have been established before sending out an electrician at 4.30pm to attend a job that could potentially take up to 3 hours!!! Although he probably had no intention of seeing the job done as he turned up with no spares of any sort. She hasn't had a bill yet, but I...

    Checking an immersion heater.

Tanks guys. To clarify the reason for my question. My 87 year old mother called in a local electrician because her she had no hot water - it usually heated up over night. Day 1: The electrician arrived, inspected the tank and left again saying he needed to order a part, but as he was...

    Checking an immersion heater.

When the only form of hot water heating is electric and the water is not getting hot, is there a method and/orequipment to test whether the thermostat or/and the element is/are faulty, or is it a question of trial and error?? Anyone know? Thanks

Fault with Hotpoint WMF760 Washing M/c

Yes - unfortunately it was the programmer which needed replacing - it was not cheap - over £100 if I recall

What is the coverage of 1 ton of Type 1 MOT stone?

That's also the conclusion I came to because when I spoke to our local quarry last week and enquired about coverage they said that for 1cu.m I would need 2 tons of ballast. So that's 1 ton per 0.5 cu.m = 5m² @ .1m (100mm)

What material to seal edging against tarmac

I am trying to tidy up the entrance to our drive and for reasons I won't bore you with I have decided to use decorative stone chippings. Where the road contractor cut away the tarmac to form an edge I am putting in edging stone and notice that there are gaps between the edging and the...

What is the coverage of 1 ton of Type 1 MOT stone?

850kg = 0.85 metric ton 0.836576 long ton 0.936965 short ton Now - what's the difference and which do the quarries/suppliers use when quoting tons :?:

    Static - acceptable or not?

It certainly will. I bought this one because the last one we had developed a leak in the pump - and as it was 3 years old I could not get any spares to replace the disintegrated rubber sealing ring - typical B&Q, not the cheapest and still have a built in obsolescence.

    Static - acceptable or not?

Thanks guys. I was a it surprised to receive a call shortly after my last post. It was from an rep in the service department at the suppliers. He concluded that perhaps water had made its way inside the pressure washer and 'damaged' the unit such that it was not discharging power properly...

    Static - acceptable or not?

I initially thought that would have been more likely - and if that is the case shouldn't they have some form of warning about this possibly happening????

    Static - acceptable or not?

Today I used a new power wash for the first time. When I was finished I removed the plug from the wall socket. As I went to roll up the cable to put the power washer away I touched the steel pins on the plug and received a hell of a shock. It wasn't quite the same degree of shock I've...

    Anyone here experienced with Tarmac?

Hmm!! Now I tend to agree that is does sound cheap as I have now discovered that he told next door that he would also remove a certain amount of material at the top of the access slope - so that the 4" covering of tarmac would not stand proud of his current courtyard level. He did say...

    Anyone here experienced with Tarmac?

Cheap? Why, how much is the material cost of 2.5cum of Tarmac? I guessed it would be about £200 (bearing in mind it is part of a load, the rest being used for other parts of the lane) - so £450 for a couple of hours work to lay/roll it seemed a lot to me - but I could be way out with material...

    Anyone here experienced with Tarmac?

I ask because although I am not an experienced builder, I have a situation on which I have an opinion but based on common sense rather than technical experience. I can post more info (such as photos and more detail) but initially the circumstances are: A Tarmac laying contractor...

Fault with Hotpoint WMF760 Washing M/c

She doesn't think it was H20 but can't remember. Problem is that the coded flashed on and of so quick she only noticed it briefly, and it has not repeated since. We have switched the machine off and on a few times as once the door locks and the machine won't start, even on turning off the...
