Building Control Notice, Part P and DIY

I agree but the BCO I spoke to today didn't have a clue and so I was hoping for some suggestions to steer him in as I reckon that, within reason, I can 'dictate' what they'll do.

Building Control Notice, Part P and DIY

I'm currently doing a complete refurbishment and that will include rewiring. The work is being carried out under a Notice and I told Building Control today that I would be carrying out the work and when/what stage would they like to come and inspect. Maybe I'm the first person to say this as...

brightsparx website - duplicitous and misleading?

A screen grab produces a very poor print image. Another annoying feature is that all the diagrams are in portrait mode and so to read them you have to stick your head to one side as I've not found out how to rotate them with my software packages. All-in-all - a waste of a fiver IMO. bet...

brightsparx website - duplicitous and misleading?

Following a reference to this site in another post, I paid to download the 'Testing Electrical Installations' pdf file. .....and at a fiver you can't complain...only don't try to print it out 'cos you can't. You need a password to print it out. I asked for one and was told 'you can't...

laying visqueen around a chimney breast located in the middl

How do I lay Visqueen dpm around an obstacle located in the middle of the room? Struggling to see how I do this without cutting some slits which kind of defeats the purpose? Thanks

    Laying a concrete floor indoors

Thanks... that clears things up for me.

    Laying a concrete floor indoors

OLD - been thinking some more about the practicalities of this. The dpm will have been tacked up the walls. Do I put the battens inside the dpm and then nail through the temporary batten AND dpm into the wall? If so then what about the holes that the nails will have made in the dpm since...

    Laying a concrete floor indoors

Thanks Old....walls a bit irregular but reckon I should be able to fix something up.

    Laying a concrete floor indoors

The room size is about 8.5m x 5m and interrupted in the middle by a large chimney breast. How do I level the concrete off/tamp it down since the existing walls prevent me and a helper from standing on either side of the floor with a long timber batten as you would do if you were laying a...

Floor insulation - under or over

Sorry...one more question. If the insulation is below the concrete slab then I can see the benefit of having vertical insulation around the perimeter of the room. But if the insulation is on top of the slab then I can't see the need for any vertical insulation. Is this a valid statement?

Floor insulation - under or over

Not completely but I've had a good stab at them. I'm hoping that this is the case (that they are flexible). A telephone conversation to one of the surveyors (at least that was how the receptionist described him) did seem to quote the regs exactly. Hopefully when the BCO comes out for his...

Floor insulation - under or over

No screed as the battens will fit straight onto the concrete slab, the oak flooring then going on top of those.

Floor insulation - under or over

I can see the logic of your argument and then I read elsewhere the comment 'put it on top of the concrete slab...why heat up the slab'. So I'm confused.

Floor insulation - under or over

Understood and apologies if my post came across in the wrong way. I agree with your and others comments later on in the thread and agree that insulation is a good thing. However, I guess that my concern stems from the fact that much of what is written relates to a 'new build' in which case it...

Floor insulation - under or over

Since anything I do to the property will be an improvement in terms of insulation (ie it has none), it does seem to me that the requirements are ridiculously onerous...to the point where one is inclined to say 'stuff it - I'm leaving the floor/building as it is' !!

Floor insulation - under or over

To fix the oak flooring using secret nailing It's "The Building Regulations Explained and Illustrated 13th edition 2007" :D Page 8.41 says 'If required, insulation may also be incorporated'....but I can now see that later on in the book it does talk about an improved thermal element...my...

Floor insulation - under or over

...the concrete slab? Final finish will be oak floorboards onto battens. One suggestion is to put the insulation on top of the concrete slab and in between the battens. Seems to me like a good idea especially as I could also use the space to route pipes etc. and it will save a smidgeon on...

    Training/courses/certficates and Part P

Thanks for the advice. Looking at the site I read this.. If you are currently an experienced installer and you undertake a wide range of electrical installation work (for example, you do ‘new builds’ or rewires) you should attend the 4 day training course and then undergo the full scheme...
