    Render outside plaster inside????

My eyes hurt from searching for months! Firstly, is there a thread for single skim render on bare aggregate block outside walls. Found BS sites that want £188 for this info! Secondly, should I plaster or render very uneven internal sandstone walls prior to dot dab or battens. Please, I asked...

    Sealing sandstone internally

Looked at the cost of EML..... hell fire! However, finally got some extra money together to ask architect. This should be of interest to anyone with the same problem, as nobody seems to know the answer - Plain and simple waterproof PVA to prime the sandstone. Sorted.

    Sealing sandstone internally

Thanks for the suggestion. Trouble is, I only saw the house once a few weeks ago, and didn't get much chance to check everything. I asked a similar question at the time about sandstone. Yesterday, I got to have a better look -(we get the keys tomorrow) The surface of the exposed sandstone...

    Sealing sandstone internally

Hello trowelmonkey1. Celotex say it's not possible to seal sandstone. Therefore, I can't use their product to dot and dab it. The architect says I can. I'm not plastering it because I can't plaster, but can dot and dab. So, I'll divide the walls into 2 feet sections with battens and...

    Sealing sandstone internally

Hello to all. I'm still researching! Internal walls have been stripped of plaster completely. (Solid sandstone) I now need to rake out the 100 year old 'powder' between the joints. Then I want to seal all the surfaces so the next stages stick to them. I then need to repoint these big gaps...

    Cutting slate

Thanks to both of you for the replies. The guillotine looks an obviously good option. But, the cheaper one is the Edma cutters. This roof will be my first and last, and there's not a great many tiles to cut, so whatever I get will be no use when finished. So, does the Edma mean you need to...

    Cutting slate

Hello to all. Searched for info in the forum, but no specific questions like this - Can you cut roof slates with one of those circular saw type ceramic tile cutters? I'll have a valley on 2 sides of my extension and need to cut them at an angle. I've read about chopping them lengthways with...

    fridge freezing up

hello! I read a topic similar to my problem. The plate at the back of the fridge has a block of ice at the bottom left, which drips into the drain channel and freezes that. I suspect the pipe behind is leaking. But, there's a screw holding the plate and a plastic bung. Does that mean it can...

How repair dpc in concrete floor

Thanks for the replies. The house is very old, so I don't know if there's a membraine or not until I start digging. My present house - 50 years old - doesn't. It has an epoxy? screed. Its like bonfire toffee when you break into it! If it's membraine, I'll follow your advice. If not, I'll fill...

    Half-landing ok?

Ok, brain frying nicely now. I can get the risers and goings within the regs. But, I still can't get past the fact I've essentially got 2 sides of a triangle the same length, making a 45 deg angle. No matter how I look at altering risers etc, I'm still going to have the 45 deg angle. The...

    Half-landing ok?

Thanks to both of you for the replies. It's all going through planning/building regs and an architect. The architect hasn't worked out the stairs, but he says he thinks it may fit. The whole design of the upstairs hinges on this! I've spent ages working it out, which isn't really part of the...

    Half-landing ok?

Hello Richard. Thanks for the reply. Good info on that link so I've saved it, thanks. So, what do you reckon about my revised drawing? Does that satisfy the regs do you think? http://www.diynot.com/network/Johnboy54/albums/ thanks again. John

    Sandstone dry lining

Just checked it and found a couple of prices. Celotex plus a board works out about £12 a board cheaper. That's a big saving for me. Thanks anyway. John

    Half-landing ok?

Hello to all. I'm moving the stairs in an old house I've bought. I've worked out I need a minimum base length of 9' 2" to achieve a slope of 42 degrees. The only way I can do this is to pinch 9" from the landing. I've attached a drawing which may illustrate this. (double click to increase...

How repair dpc in concrete floor

Hello to all. I'm installing a downstairs wc on the opposite side of the room to the soil pipe. I'll dig a channel out of the concrete floor to lay the pipe, but how do I repair the concrete to make sure damp doesn't rise? Thank you. John

    Sandstone dry lining

Thanks Richard. I'd already seen the link on here when searching, but as you said, it didn't really help. I followed the other and then rang British Gypsum training college. No, I can't dot and dab sandstone. I asked about a screed they showed on that link, designed to go on porous walls...
