    Unbelievable.

If you can find out the date when they made those stickle brick buckets you can prove it was the last owner. Is there any legal action you can take in a case like this? Was there anything in the paperwork when you bought the house to say that no defects were known? Just a long shot. Trouble is...

    Attic beams

They have to be softwood in the attic surely unless you have a very expensive house. This will be some kind of pine. Any finish will do the job, just take your pick. Hope this helps.

    Gurgle in radiators

One and a half bar but it dropped to one bar when I bled the last rad so I left it at that.

Scantronic alarm flasher won't stop but alarm works fine.

We have a Scantronic 9448+ style house alarm. While we were out there was a power cut. When we came home the alarm unit blue flasher was flashing outdoors. The two green alternating lights are still working. The neighbours heard no alarm sound. The alarm has no indication on the control box...

    Gurgle in radiators

My daughter is worried because we had a dramatic burst pipe yesterday and now after repairing it her radiator is gurgling but I have bled all the rads of air. What could the gurgling be? I have not yet added the cleanser but intend to do it first thing tomorrow morning. I told her it is just a...

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

If you have the money it is well worth paying someone professional to do it. I just need to find the right one next time. Trouble is you need to know a bit about it to understand if the person you have taken on is doing a good job.

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

Cleaning up your own mess is also a lot less annoying than cleaning up the mess someone else has made. Part of the reason I'm doing this myself after some bad experiences with other people.

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

Yep thanks I've taken that onboard. I have rubbed some very fine abrasive paper on it too to make sure there are not bits of debris on there.

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

With a clear head and having talked to people on here and at the plumber's merchants I now have a better idea of what happened. I have sat in the bathroom and examined the situation. What I discovered was that the two pipe ends poking out of the floor were different heights. The one which blew...

    Boss white

Thanks I just rang the people who make Boss White. The guy there said some use it for reassurance that the joint won't leak but it is not a necessity. It shouldn't make it harder to undo again. He said to use PTFE tape on the threads and maybe a smear of this on the olive.

    Boss white

If used on threads does it make the job of removing the threads in the future difficult? If so, why do people use it?

    Boss white

Should boss white be used to help seal olives?

    Best practise when adding TRVs

Thanks for the advice. I was very surprised to see the olive slip right off when the others around the house are locked so tightly.

    Best practise when adding TRVs

Would it be best practise when replacing one end of a rads with TRVs to replace all the other ends too? Or was I just unlucky when one of the other ends popped off when I refilled the system? - (Thanks for all your help yesterday people.)

    Worktop Query

I'd agree with this, just be very careful when laying the steel back in place as you can't slide it into place. Best to place one edge in its exact loctaion then lay the rest down carefully. good luck.

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

It's only now that the panic is over that I realise that it's not like a mains pipe going where it just keeps on going. As it was an upstairs rad, there was only so much water that was there to flow out, then it would have stopped. The fountain gushing out of what looked like the bathroom floor...

Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

Thanks, yes my wife is doing that while I rush around like the house is on fire. Just worried that another one will go when I'm back at work. Some of the pipes going to the rads are at odd angles.
