Bang and hot water all over the place!! Help!

With a clear head and having talked to people on here and at the plumber's merchants I now have a better idea of what happened. I have sat in the bathroom and examined the situation. What I discovered was that the two pipe ends poking out of the floor were different heights. The one which blew off last night is bent just under the floorboards and so has no play upwards and sits 15mm below the other one. The rad was fitted to the wall based on the height of the taller pipe end. The shorter one was then under constant strain when connected which eventually lead to the olive slipping off. All I have to do is lower the rad by 15mm to give both pipe ends a bit of play. Wish me luck and thanks once again to all of you for your advice. I may get a professional next time but have learnt a lot doing this for myself.

make sure the pipe that the olive slipped off is not damaged or indented or it won't seal.

Yep thanks I've taken that onboard. I have rubbed some very fine abrasive paper on it too to make sure there are not bits of debris on there.

Cleaning up your own mess is also a lot less annoying than cleaning up the mess someone else has made. Part of the reason I'm doing this myself after some bad experiences with other people.

You can't learn from someone elses mistakes can you? Never pay someone to do something you can do yourself.

If you have the money it is well worth paying someone professional to do it. I just need to find the right one next time. Trouble is you need to know a bit about it to understand if the person you have taken on is doing a good job.

Lovely warm house without one room being hotter than the others. Got there in the end. Just got to add the cleanser now. Bought Kilrock cleanser and Easy Squeeze injector.
