They are probably(almost definately) connected to the same pipe ,and may have insufficient fall or a partial blockage or undersize pipe or running uphill . :roll:

You answered your own question, it was cleaned and worked for a day, once they are buggered then its best to change them,and all symptoms you mentioned point to pump as boiler is overheating as it cant get the hot water away fast enough. Only other problem is that once it has overheated badly...

I have seen it done , with the expansion pipe sealed off and bugger me do you know the cylinder had split causing a bit of a leak below. Not a good idea to make your own unvented.

There are lots of back to backs in leeds, the firm i work for owns hundreds but they can be very nice and i suspect because of the fact you have neighbours on 3 sides they should be cheap to heat, just pray you dont have drainage problems. We get so many calls for drains blocking and cellars...

you could fit a non return valve on the cold feed before the boiler which should stop this happening due to pressure fluctuations.
