Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

OK then.... WE HAVE HOT WATER!! The engineer came around last Friday evening to take a quick look and then returned on Saturday to sort it out. He ran various tests and also over the Friday evening we isolated the cold water feed, let the pressure out of a open tap and then checked the...

Be better to remove AOL altogether really... :) just add the mail server details into Outlook, Thunderbird or some other mail client direct. I'm not going to bother with the boiler anymore now.... I wont have time during the week and frankly I can't be bothered - once I have had that guy in...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Yesterday when I was messing about I did turn off the cold water supply to the boiler... this completely cut off the hot water supply... from a tap but I never checked to see if the drain pipe was still leaking. I have found a guy who is fairly local and specialises in Vaillant boilers, he's...

Yup boiler pressure is still increasing, yesterday evening (having been set earlier to 1 bar) it was up to over 2 bar and the temperature was zero. I am starting to wonder now if the gauge or sender is faulty? It seems like the leaking from boiler via the PRV has got worse too.... it's er...

or...... you could bring your base unit, minus all the other bits (mouse, keyboard, monitor etc..) to my place and i could completely reinstall Windows.... XP? for you fresh plus plenty of other software to keep you busy, whilst you fix my boiler. ;) As for AOL, I would never let that near my...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Hi Tony.... all... OK had a few hours on it... this morning... First up decided to drain the whole thing down... no particular reason... just because I could and was planning to dismantle the pressure relief valve and perhaps secondary exchanger (decided not to in the end). Having...

haha... I can just remember the Atom but more so the Electron and BBC micro's (that I used at school)...they were like the rolls royce of computing at the time as PC were very much still business machines and cost a fortune.. My first computer (rather than PC) was a Sinclair Spectrum...

Yup I realise that BB....unfortunately it's a prime example of one of those things that you forget about and don't look at until a problem arises.

Hahaha... well you know what you are not to far astray on the 386... back when we had it installed (end of 1994) I think I had just managed to move mountains where I worked so that I could have a Apricot 486 33mhz DX2, a few months after I got a 100mhz 486 DX4. My first own PC was a Pentium...

Hmmm.. OK...I'm going to really take a good look at this - I might even take some pictures (not very interesting but might help clarify what is what...) I work in IT...small company so I pretty much have to cover most area's - a bit of a jack of all trades really but it keeps the work varied...

I'm just pulling your leg mate, I know you will probably be right and i would not expect you to be able to just pick up and do my job either. I'm abit concerned the filling loop was left in place though...makes me wonder how many other corners were cut by our fitter.

Yes I'll do that... thats no problem, I am listening to your suggestions and you may be right....... but I "think" you may not!

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Yes good point Tony, although I have to say the pressure seems to be increasing at a much slower rate now. The filling valve could be allowing extra water to go into the system, although it feels (and sounds) as though it is shutting off fully. I have approached a engineer who is corgi...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Hi Tony... £2000 is out of the question so I think I might have to go for replacement and clean option... I'm quite competant at general plumbing...and most mechanical things... as long as I don't go near the gas... could I do some of this work myself... the secondary heat exchanger looks...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Thanks for the comments DP, I must admit concerns about condensing boiler reliability have been aired....louded... when I first posted on here nearly two years ago. The leaking secondary exchanger was replaced and gained us another two years of use.... That cost £200... it sounds like...

Hi Chris... thats the one that was replace about 18 months ago... it's a chromed thing...original was black plastic... Cost me £200 to replace... had a year warranty and 5 year antiscale guarantee I think... externally it looks fine... So this has heating water passing through it... but as...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Thanks for the helpful info. Tony I have just checked and from what I can see through the boiler housing the heat exchanger (I think it is the one).... is a large red chamber at the back... It has the following label on it:- W + P TYP VKN12 41 KW 94 12 Litre I think the filling loop...

New condensing boiler - suggestions please?

Cheers Strachan... Agile, the 242 has never really provided much of a flow and barely any when another hot water tap is in use... but with the recent problems the hot water is more like the temperature of a public swimming pool.... We don't have a separately powered/heated shower etc...
