cutting the top of a tree

What tree is it? If it is an evergreen best to leave till spring. If its deciduous (loses its leaves in winter) then do it in December. You dont need to put anything on it. They - scientists? - used to think it protects from disease, but they have now decided it does'nt, so no need to bother.

    Tile shops

Can any of you lovely people recommend tile outlets for none trade persons. My other half is moaning at the potential cost (thirty pounds a square metre seems to be average). We live in North London but don't mind a bit of a trek. The only place I can find on the web is called Presleys in...

It means you have a lovely healthy wormy lawn. It always happens in damp autumn weather. Get a besome broom (witches broom) and brush them before mowing, or go over them with a lawn rake.

qualcast cylinder mower - any good?

Gardening Which? best buy petrol mower is the Honda Izy. This is a rotary; cylinder mowers can struggle a bit with long grass. Petrol mowers are so much easier to use, none of that hassle with the flex. Find a proper dealer; more expensive than Diy stores but should give you better advice

    One rattling radiator

Thanks JohnD for quick reply. We have tried your suggestion but that does'nt seem to be the problem. The rattling starts when the rad becomes really hot. Could it be because its been off for months?

    Rose

Depends on the rose, I think. Only ramblers (Climbers with long arching stems) should be done in august. Everything else in Feb/march. Ordinary climbers take off a third and wire to a support. Roses like a bit of bondage! they respond by flowering more. Hybrid teas, shrubs etc, you can take off...

    One rattling radiator

Most of our radiators have valves. Three of them don't. The biggest one (valveless)is in our living room; it has begun to make a terrible noise when heating is on and we can't hear the telly. Does it need a valve or a good clean out? We have a Halstead combi boiler.
