Dealing with bodge job in drain

Thanks both. I did wonder if it might come to that (replacing the chamber) which might be a bit beyond me, but ultimately worth doing to get it sorted. That said, I will look into the elbow idea first, as that should direct it away from both inlets on the opposite side - as long as it's compact...

Removing white patches from exterior wall

Ah! I'm sure I was offered that in a nightclub once. :D Thank you - I'll look out for some of that then (muriatic acid according to the internet - hadn't heard that name but I gather it's hydrochloric acid, so will be taking care with that one!).

Dealing with bodge job in drain

Thanks @dan77714, that non-return valve is a new one on me but definitely worth a look. The air admittance valve is something I've seen before but it hadn't occurred to me for this situation so that's another one to look at - thank you. I hope it works out for you. The eggy smell is certainly...

Dealing with bodge job in drain

Bit of a whiffy one this - not for the faint-hearted - maybe leave til later if you're about to have your dinner. Long story short - we noticed an eggy smell kept appearing in the kitchen and wondered if there was a problem with the drains. Still not sure we've got to the (ahem) bottom of that...

Removing white patches from exterior wall

Parents had a gutter that was leaking for some time. That's now sorted, but it has left behind some unsightly white staining on the brickwork below. A scrubbing brush and soapy water has failed to shift it. Any ideas what it is exactly, and how best to clean it up? Photo attached.

    Toilet fill valve replacement

Yes I noticed the Torbecks show up on the Fluidmaster website and guessed there might've been a takeover or merger. I can't imagine they'd send anyone out either, but thought at least if it stopped working properly (as some reviews suggest) say a year down the line then it would be good to be...

    Toilet fill valve replacement

Thanks both, and yes mine does appear to be the 1/2" based on that thread size. Just having a look at options now - the Fluidmaster ones look good although the warranty info is confusing (their own site shows one with a 1 year guarantee, one with 7 years, and then retailer site says 5 years...

    Toilet fill valve replacement

I need to replace a bottom-entry fill valve but there are a few things I'm not sure about. Firstly... the existing (original) valve is a Roca one, and I'm having trouble identifying exactly which part it is because there seem to be at least a couple of different variants out there that look...

Rhinofloor range - relative durability & comfort

Our bathroom flooring needs replacing - we're planning to whip out the grotty old carpet and put some vinyl down instead. Trouble is, the design we like the best is from the Rhinofloor XL Supergrip range, which only has a relatively thin backing and wear layer, and a 5 year guarantee compared to...

Mortar holes + bees = bad combination

Nope, not in the middle of nowhere - maybe that's why the others didn't bother getting back to me... too many better jobs around for them!

Mortar holes + bees = bad combination

Thanks all, was just wondering if the hourly rate & estimate seemed reasonable as it's difficult to find example costs for a job like this (and the other companies I asked didn't get back to me). Anyway, no one has cried 'rip-off' yet so that's something... ;)

Mortar holes + bees = bad combination

Hmm, considering I get a bit jittery on our 15ft ladder as it is... yeah maybe £80 doesn't seem so bad after all. And who knows, he may just manage to get it done in 1 hour... (wishful thinking - sometimes the only thing that keeps me sane ;)).

Mortar holes + bees = bad combination

Long story short - last year, bees took up residence in my nice sunny south-facing wall, right next to my bedroom. Noisy things they were too, but just had to wait for the little blighters to go (didn't even leave me any honey to say thanks). I need to get something done about it before they...
