2 way light switch problem after building work

Yes, that's it. Now all I need to do is convince the electrician that he must have rewired the junction box. I have just found a junction box in the roof space with at least 10 cables going into it.

2 way light switch problem after building work

Absolutely, before the building work started these switches worked 100% correctly. The house was rewired in 2008 and all switches replaced with new. Would an electrician at that time put a junction box somewhere inaccessible (assuming he followed the rules)?

2 way light switch problem after building work

Thanks that would be great. I get option A as it is the same as I drew further up, but the switches have been replaced with others with same result. Option B is puzzling me. Every time I draw this I get the light off in 3 out of the 4 switch combinations which is the opposite of what is happening.

2 way light switch problem after building work

Thanks, this is doing my head in too. I think the diagram I drew covers what I have. The thick black line represents the shorted switch. The mystery is that both switches have been swapped for others and I still have the same problem so it must be shorted out somewhere else.

2 way light switch problem after building work

So as far as I understand it this is what I have so only one of the four switch position combinations will turn the light off because somewhere (but seemingly not at the switch) there is short between Com and L1 or L2. In this diagram only LHS up, RHS down will break the circuit.

2 way light switch problem after building work

Here is the RHS of the 2 gang switch. This operates living room light which works fine.

2 way light switch problem after building work

Yes, so it's not actually a landing but a hall way between living room and downstairs bedrooms (chalet bungalow). 2 gang switch is in the dining room next to door. LHS operates hall light (the problem light). RHS operates living room light which also has a 2 way switch. Living room light works...

2 way light switch problem after building work

I am 100% certain switches worked properly before. Used it every day for 2 years. Noticed problem (not testing, just noticed through normal use) within 2 hours of electrician leaving house. I was thinking the junction box might have been changed to add more lights to the same circuit but I'm no...

2 way light switch problem after building work

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to get my head around how the switches could be wired incorrectly and also concluded that somewhere one switch is permanently on. So this morning I took a switch from elsewhere in the house that is definitely working and swapped it with each problem switch...

2 way light switch problem after building work

Ok. Thanks both. I'll try this in the morning and see what happens.

2 way light switch problem after building work

So if both switches are in the up position (that might not be the correct term) the light is off. Moving either switch to the down position will switch the light on. This is what makes me think both switches work as they both do something, just not the right thing collectively. The problem is...

2 way light switch problem after building work

What is really puzzling me is that I would have thought something getting broken, like a wire being cut, would lead to the light being more likely to be off than on but 3 out of the 4 switch combinations leave the light on.

2 way light switch problem after building work

I think both switches work because they both can turn the light on and off as long as the other switch is in the right position. The electrician said the same about the junction box. Light fitting just has a single live, neutral, earth coming into it. I don't have a multimeter. Is it feasible...

2 way light switch problem after building work

I recently had some building work done on my house and now a 2 way switch right next to where the building work was is not working. I noticed the problem an hour after the electrician left from the final fit but he claims he didn't touch it and it can't be him (there was significant rewiring but...

    Possible subsidence?

Thanks for your replies. Reassuringly it sounds like it's not subsidence. Phew! Property is about 10 years old. I've lived here 4 years. Always been insured. About 2 years with current insurance. Said no sign of subsidence because there wasn't any when I got the policy. Apologies for my...

    Possible subsidence?

I've just noticed these cracks appear in the back outside wall of my house. One starts from the the top corner of the patio door, goes diagonally up 3 bricks and then horizontal for the width of the door and diagonally down to the other corner. A similar one starts from the corner of the kitchen...
