    Blocking up Air Bricks

Hi all Our house was built in the late eighties of what I would term 'standard' construction. By that I mean twin walls and cavity - if that's the right expression! There were/are two air bricks, one in the lounge and one at the top of the stairs. I was under the impression that the one in...

    Change of fence colour

Real stupid question I'm sure, but has anyone tried to make their fence panels a lighter colour? The reason I ask is that I'll be putting new panels up over Easter and my good lady has decided that she'd like them to stay a golden brown colour. Unfortunately the rest of the panels, shed...

    Leaky Conservatory

Thanks for your reply brickie I believe the conservatory is manufactured by Synseal, but it sounds a similar arrangement to that which you describe. Would you say that the leadwork should be over the top of the highest plastic trim, not under it? Cheers Nick

    Leaky Conservatory

Hi all We had an edwardian style conservatory built earlier this year by a reasonably reputable local company. Unfortunately we have a slight leak from the roof. It shows itself below the 'top cap' or 'spider' They've just been back today for the third time to try to rectify it and...

    Dusty Concrete Floor

Cheers Masona, may have been a possibility but running out of time to be honest. May scrape as much loose stuff off and then PVA. May even just be worrying about nothing!!! Nick

    Painting new plaster

Used crown emulsion which stated could be diluted by up to 20% water for porous surfaces. Did two coats like this followed by two undiluted coats. Still up there but I guess only time will tell!!!! Cheers for your help. Nick

    Dusty Concrete Floor

Tiler finally came around last week and seems to think that the floor shouldn't be a problem, although wants me to brush it and give it a coat of PVA (one part PVA to five water I guess). Is there any benefit to be had by giving it two coats? I tried to get some reassurance from him but when...

    Painting new plaster

Firstly my apologies, I'm sure this must have been raised before but have searched to no avail. We had a conservatory built, which was finished some 7 weeks ago. The house wall and all new walls were plasterboarded (dot and dab) and then skimmed. My questions are: The plaster seems...

    Dusty Concrete Floor

Woody Many thanks for your responce. Hopefully the tiler will agree with your thoughts, but on the phone he seemed a bit concerned. I'll post his comments once he's been around. As far as whether the floor has dried out sufficiently you've concerned me slightly. We were getting all of...

    Dusty Concrete Floor

mmmmmm.... had a horrible feeling that was the case!! Just been reading an article on 'laitance' on the net which suggests shot blasting to remove it, although I think this was for laying a vinyl floor. Have got the tiler coming around on Saturday to have a look. Pending what he says will...

    Dusty Concrete Floor

Thanks Noseall, do you think it is likely that it was the rain which just weakened the surface mix then?

    Dusty Concrete Floor

Hi all. We had a conservatory built around seven weeks ago and have arranged for a tiler to come in another couple of weeks to do the floor. I have two questions you knowledgeable lot may be able to help with: 1. Is 9 or 10 weeks sufficient drying out time for the floor? At it's deepest I...

    Filling of Holes in Wall....Help

.......or you can get one coat plaster for repairs. Depending on make I think they will fill holes between 1-2" deep. Check out the instructions! Only thing I found was the surface finish was good but not brilliant so I had to sand it down slightly which can be a bit messy. That said...

    Demolishing Partition wall

The loft hatch sits between rafters, so no cutting having taken place. I've been up in the loft this evening and all the partition walls appear to have been put in AFTER the ceilings were. Tends to suggest that they definitely aren't load bearing. The only other thing to throw in to the...

    Demolishing Partition wall

Big All Finally got you!! I think what you are suggesting is pretty much what I had in mind actually. As long as you are in agreement that by pulling down the stud partition I won't be weakening my roof and that 3" x 2" should be strong enough to support it all I should be laughing  ...

    Demolishing Partition wall

Big-All Thanks for your suggestion, but unfortunately I'm slightly lost. I can't picture what you're suggesting as I'm not sure what you mean by how deep am I going. The structure will go across the whole width of the stairs (approx 1 metre) although the cupboard itself will penetrate about...

    Demolishing Partition wall

Many thanks for the prompt advice. I won't be creating any floor space, the intention at the moment is to modify standard wardrobe carcasses to fit above the stairwell (but obviously facing into the bedroom) but, as you say, bearing in mind the 2m rule. This should (fingers crossed!!) result...

    Demolishing Partition wall

Hi Guys I'm just about to start a project in our bedroom, in which I'm trying to create more usable storage space. The obvious answer is to demolish/modify a stud partition wall, the other side of which is the stair well with a huge open space right up to the ceiling. My only concern is that...
