    Lead Pipes (gas and water)

OK, so we had someone out to quote for installing a boiler today, he took one look at the lead pipe coming into our flat, and said he'd have to cap off the meter before he left (which he duly did). The lead pipe enters the flat and is the joined to some 15mm copper and then some 22mm copper...

    ovens on ring main

OK, panic over. I just gave him a call, and he said that though he did say he was putting them on a ring, he did in fact put them each on a radial. He has also put them on separate switches. Boiling water tap is 1.6KW. I take it this will be fine on the ring main?

    ovens on ring main

OK, the ring they're on serves just the kitchen; however it will also have a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, boiling water tap, extractor, 3 double sockets and 3 single sockets. Is this going to be pushing things?

    ovens on ring main

Also, would it be OK to use a single 20AMP DP switch for these (they are being installed as a single unit - ie, directly above each other).

    ovens on ring main

Hi, My electrician has been doing the first fix for my renovation, and has said he's just going to wire our twin ovens in on the ring main, as their rating is suitable for doing this. They are rated at 3.6KW / 16A each. Are these really OK to go on the ring main, or should I get him to...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

Hmm, I guess that that is stricter than Zone 3 then, as I think I can reach more than 60cms.

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

OK, so my current thinking is the bathroom. However, I see that raises yet more issues. However, am I right in thinking that if it is in Zone 3 then all is OK? Does it also need to be in a compartment/cupboard of some kind? It probably will be anyway, but is this a requirement?

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

Well, mainly because a quote isn't really what I'm after now. What I'm after is help on making a decision on what would be the best solution, so that I can then apply for listed building consent if necessary (and at least check with the conservation and planning officer if it would be...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

I started two threads on here the other day, and both have deteriorated into bickering. That's impressive for any forum!

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

Well, it seems it may be back to the drawing board. After being persuaded that it was best to leave the boiler where it was, I got the tape measure out today, and there is only 530mm between the window and the drain pipe. I require 300 (distance from window) + 100 (flue diameter) + 150...

    Sockets operated by light switches

thanks for the link, seems there is some mixed opinion on which sockets to use.

    Sockets operated by light switches

Sorry if this has been asked many times before. I did do a search first, but all the results related to adding a mains socket from the lighting circuit, which isn't what I'm wanting to do.

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

simond: Thanks for that, that has actually helped me see thing from the other side a bit more. As a software developer I know exactly how annoying it is when people are telling you how they want something to work, rather than what they want it to do. I'm just always reluctant to...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

As mentioned above, I was more just looking for general advice and opinion. I was not going to pop out and get a boiler and install it myself based on the advice (as yes, I do know that I can't do that - and even if I could, I wouldn't even go there). Personally, I tend to find it much more...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean. Are you a registered gas installer? Do you mean I should ask an installer less technical questions, and it's best not finding anything out first? I hadn't really realised these questions were even that technical, and I certainly wasn't looking...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

People opposed to typing really shouldn't use internet forums. Seriously though - with that kind of attitude, what's even the point of such a forum, surely all questions asked on here could be answered by consulting a local trades person. Obviously I'll need to consult a...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

I already have that very document, which is where I was getting my measurements from. My confusion that there wasn't sufficient space in it's current location was because where I initially wanted to move the flue to when running it from the store room was higher than it's current position, in...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

It is an openable window, but I believe the required distance from an openable window is 300mm, and it will already be about that far from it once it is past the window surround (my understanding it that it needs to be 300mm from the actual opening in the building, rather than the surround)...

    Boiler positioning and flue questions

It's a cast iron pipe; there's also nowhere to divert it to, other than the neighbour's wall (and even then, it would again be a listed building issue). I've been convinced though, I think I'm mistaken about the positioning anyway, and it should be OK where it currently is (it was actually...

    Sockets operated by light switches

Thanks all. I guess the 5A socket recommendation may have been dropped from the guidance notes because all electronics come with sealed plugs these days. They probably regard it as safer for a member of the public to blow a fuse than risk re-wiring a plug.
