    Enclosed Porch Ceiling...

I have just built a small enclosed porch approximately 1.5 x 2.5m with cavity walls and a pitched roof. The roof is felt/batten/tiles, and the ceiling inside is not yet boarded so I still have complete access to the underside for any extra work. However, once it’s covered that’ll be it! Does...

    Fresh Plaster Cracking Within 24hrs...

The plasterer is a local chap and came well recommended from others who have used him. He's been full time plastering for over 30 years (my bro-in-law went to school with him and can confirm!) The plasterboard work is faultless; smooth with good sharp internal/external corners and I can see...

Here you go. There are patches like this on pretty much most of the two sand/cement rendered walls...

    Fresh Plaster Cracking Within 24hrs...

Hi, We had our bathroom walls and ceiling plastered yesterday. Two walls and the ceiling are new plasterboard, and two solid block walls were plastered over the remnants of a sand/cement render left from removing old tiles and plaster. The two sand/cement rendered walls have started cracking...

Rotten Sole Plate - How To Repair/Replace?

Here you go... Took me a while to get it done due to not having a lot of spare time. No damage to the bedroom wall next door, as I ended up chiselling out the rotten plate from this side. To be honest, most of it fell apart! I propped the top plate with timber as I cut out the bases of the...

Yes, this area is where the bath was. Looks like it had been leaking and damp for years.

    Tiling Onto Sand/Cement Render?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's all pretty sound, solid and dry, just a few 'dings' from the SDS taking off the tiles. Which primer would be recommended?

Rotten Sole Plate - How To Repair/Replace?

Hi All, Currently gutting our first-floor bathroom to repair and upgrade. I was aware of the rotten floorboards and joists and the need to replace, but I have found the sole plate between the bathroom and one of the bedrooms is almost gone too. Any tips on what should be done here? Cheers.

    Tiling Onto Sand/Cement Render?

Hi All, Just been ripping out the old bathroom for a full rebuild (floor, ceiling, walls, the lot). While pulling away the old tiles most of the thistle plaster has come away too, leaving the sand and cement scratch render. Can I just prime and tile directly to the render base, or is there...

How To Reinforce This Floor Joist?

Yes, it starts kicking up from the knot until it enters the cavity about 1m off to the left of the pic.

    Reinforce Joists?

Damn it! After pulling down the ceiling in the room next to the hallway which is the same length, I found all the joists run at 90deg to the ones in the hallway. Back to thinking about sistering deeper timber to the original joists, butted wall to wall, with hefty noggins to prevent twisting.

How To Reinforce This Floor Joist?

Hi, Another joist problem in our 1950's house. Pulled down fibreboard and taped ceiling to replace with boards and found this split and knot in the first joist. The split is about 1m from the end. It runs over, but doesn't sit on the wall in the pic (and the wall is coming down anyway). No...

    Reinforce Joists?

A good point that I did consider Woody. There is a room on one side which is the same length, but I thought it would be just my luck to assume all was the same, and then later discover a supporting beam at 90deg running wall-to-wall mid way along!

    Reinforce Joists?

Thanks Munzy, Yes, the centres are 400mm. Would it be ok to bolt a deeper joist (?? x 220mm) down the length of the existing four joists, butted up to the walls either end? The small drop in ceiling height would not be a problem. Cheers

    Reinforce Joists?

Hi, I'm looking to take down a small internal block wall in our hallway (marked in red on drawing). The wall currently has four 50 x 190 joists passing over it, of which only two appear to be actually resting on it. The joists span 5070mm and sit in blockwork at either end. The wall to come...

    Help With Concrete Floor

Cheers for the reply. Do you mean sand, dpm and concrete in just the old (red) area? How deep for the sand? Concrete up to the new base floor (point 3) or right up to finished floor level? Cheers.
