    Low water flow.

Hi We've got quite a low water flow and I've been told it's because of the old steel pipework underground (judging by the state of the steel in the house, I'm not suprised). The pressure is fine and flow OK for a second or so. Does anyone know how much it would be to get a new connection...

    Tiling a shower cubicle

Hi What is the minimum size batton to fix aquapanels to a brick wall? I've only got 35mm to play with. Also, is it best to get a shower tray with upstands for tiling over, or can a flat top tray be well sealed with tiles. If so, what's the best way? Thanks for your help. rcs

    Joist Hangers

Hi Masona The joist hangers are the masonry set type, retrofitting into a 1930's house. Other than the type in the picture, it shouldn't make much difference should it? Ta

    Joist Hangers

Hello all. Does anyone know if I can use 100mm Joist Hangers with 150mm or larger joists if they have noggins (in lieu of herringbone struts) to prevent twisting? The span is only 1mtr and there are 3 at 230mm centres (approx). Larger joists are to give clearance for soil pipe passing through...

Sounds logical. Thanks for your reply.

    Closed Fireplace

We have 2 upstairs fireplaces that have been closed off and vents put in. I'm wondering if it's possible to close off the vent to have a flat wall and put a vent brick in the outer side of the chimney instead. Hope someone can help. Cheers

Making a shower in a cupboard over trimmer joist

Hi Noseall, thanks for the reply. Can you get custom made shower trays or are they all standard. If I fit anything bigger than 780mm, the headroom over the stairs will be a little too close. I plan to push the wall out another 10" about 10" above the shower tray to maximise the space as this...

Making a shower in a cupboard over trimmer joist

Hi Amongst many alterations that we're planning, one that is causing us a little headache is how we can maximise the use of a huge cupboard in the bathroom. This cupboard sits on a trimmer joist and extends over the stair well of a 1930's 'U' shape stair, currently accommodating the hot water...

Replacing an old Ash/quarry tile floor

Hi I'm planning on replacing an unlevel, damp quarry tiled floor with concrete but don't know how deep to dig out. Could anyone give advice on how deep to dig and what should go down, i.e hardcore, sand, dpm, insulation etc. Many Thanks

Leak checking CH for new Combi system?

Are there pressure testers available on the market or do you have to make them up? Tool Hire?

Leak checking CH for new Combi system?

We're looking at changing the boiler for a combi and wondering if it is worth leak/pressure checking the CH pipework (as it's mostly accessible with the floors removed) to avoid any future problems. Has anyone done this and is it recommended? What sort of pressure might I be looking at using...

    Wooden Lintels

We're planning on replacing the existing casement windows in the near future but as the outside is heavily rendered, I can't see how the outer course relates with the window. I'd prefer to go concrete though, just don't know how it's all going to work (acro etc) when we replace the windows and...

    Wooden Lintels

Thanks for your replies. So any rotten/decayed lintels can just be replaced with new timber and no BC required. What wood would I need to use and would I have to support the structure whilst I'm replacing them? Ta.

    Wooden Lintels

We have wooden lintels over each window and door in a 1920's house (9" walls) and are wondering what to do with them. One in particular is splitting/rotting so when it is replaced, should it be replaced with concrete/steel and should the BCO be involved? Thanks

    Hebel Aerated Concrete panel supplier

Hi In New Zealand I used a product called Hebel which is effectively breeze block but in panel form. I'm wondering if anyone has used it in the UK and where I might get some. It's ideal for things like Fire Places. Any help appreciated as the usual searches are so far fruitless. Many Thanks.

    scratched worktops

The repair is real easy to do but I wouldn't route out the scratch. The kit should have a solvent included (nail varnish remover), which you should clean up the scratch with, then apply the coloured 'filler', levelling off with a putty knife or similar. Smooth the filler (if necessary) and...

    Bouncy Floor. Suspect rotten joists!!

Hi Have had a survey which suggests rotten floor joists. I've had very little experience with floors and their joists but I'm thinking about pulling up the floor and getting stuck into it myself. Has anyone had experience with replacing/repairing floor joists? Could I do this myself...

    Replacement Ceiling

Thanks for your help. I guess the argument between drylining and plaster finish swings towards the latter? Over here in NZ, all the new builds are drylined (Grade 4 finish) and I have to say it's very effective, although in the wrong light, some areas look terrible. If I just board over, I...

    Rewiring access

Older properties (1960's) just have the wired cartridge fuses (with a 6" nail across it ) with adverts on TV for smoke alarms and domestic sprinklers! The multigang sockets are straight through as well. The new builds have all the bells and whistles though.

    Visible Subsidence

Thanks Static, makes a bit more sense now. I'm going to approach the insurance company and get their advice. Does the 'black mark' of having a claim against subsidence really make much difference when it comes to selling your house?
