No. I used a screwdriver as a stethoscope to listen and you can hear gurgling when the taps are turned on and off.

The joints. The front of some of these houses is made from rendered wire mesh with just a plasterboard inner wall with no insulation at all, so odd is pretty common in the property.

It is steel. The bare metal is not copper colour. The joints nearby are all hefty screw threaded unions and the pipe is rusty is places

It is definitely metal, but it is not galvanised. It is black.

I used the chat tool on STS's website: they advised to use 30mm screws. I used 70mm screws to secure the stud work to the wall and 60mm screws with hammer-in plugs to secure the board to the stud work and into the wall.

I should have added that the pipe is under the floorboards in the bathroom and is the rising main coming up from the stop cock in the kitchen.

Thank you, Oldbuffer. That is helpful and a relief to hear. I nicked the pipe with a screw. I have put a dimple in it and was unsure whether I might have weakened it. The dimple is very shallow and I cannot see it having done so. James.

Does anyone know how thick the wall of 30mm (approx) steel water pipe is? The house was built in the early 1950s. Thank you. James

I am using 12mm insulated tile backer board, similar to Wedi, in our bathroom. To give space to run pipes behind the board, I am screwing 18mm by 44mm battening to the wall at 300mm spacing. The board will be glued with Mega polyurethane glue and screwed as well with washers. Will 18mm screws be...

They are old imperial size joists, so I might have rounded the dimensions inaccurately, but so much else in these houses is "interesting", I would not be surprised that they are wired sizes

Thank you for all of the advice and suggestions. Sadly, I need to find another way to get the drain out as I discovered a steel utility pipe right in the way. I am not sure whether the pipe is still in use, but I do not want to find out the hard way.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. I have now been able to measure the joists which are 55mm by 165mm with a 2,400mm span. They are at approximately 450mm spacings: they are not consistent, but all in that region.

Thank you for this, which is helpful and frustrating. For the length of the beam that we have, the hole should be at least 600mm from the wall, but we would need them at about 400mm or so. Back to the drawing board.
