Dedicated LED spots vs GU10 LED lamps

These are very nice - go for the neutral white as the warm white is a little too orangey for my liking http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/Lighting_Downlights_Index/LEDlite_Downlights/index.html

    Replacing Consumer unit advice

I would check if spark 2 (the more expensive one) is going to to all the tests BEFORE he changes the fuse board - that way, if there are problems, then you'll know in advance and can agree a price in advance (or put the changeover on hold if it's really bad. This is what I do for my...

I find a drill is pretty good at finding timber studs.... not quite so clever on the old pipes though...

Home Purchase - work quoted and rewire?

    SIGH - why can't I be as brainy as Adam 151??? :D

Home Purchase - work quoted and rewire?

yes John and pigs might fly.... I've got a local spark round here doesn't issue an EICR if the installation is unsatisfactory - this is what he tells his customers - and of course it makes it much harder for others (ie me!) to quote for the remedial work if there's no paperwork!

Home Purchase - work quoted and rewire?

Hi Adam Ah but would it? If I squint at the forms then I think it says 'LIVE/CPC - which would suggest as you are saying (test both Line and Neutral to CPC) but how many would just test the LIVE (ie not the N?). Obv not you :) but.... NICEIC forms ask you to record them both separately...

    Chasing behind skirting

hey thanks Securespark! - I wasn't really - but I'm a 9st weakling, so anyone really can do it!

    Chasing behind skirting

Make life easy for yourself and use a 20mm one metre SDS drill bit - much easier to pull a pair of cables up that hole! The SDS with some encouragement will go through floorboards if these are running parallel with the wall and can't be lifted As Chri5 said - there is often a nice gap...

Home Purchase - work quoted and rewire?

Those NAPIT forms are pants, eh? I can't see a requirement to test N-CPC for insulation resistance, so there is a danger that a fault of this nature won't be picked up and once the RCD board is fitted, it'll be tripping away....

    Induction hob-cable size

Assuming that 50A is the total rating of the hob - I would have thought that you can apply diversity rule to this - which is first 10A plus 30% of the balance - this assumes you won't be using all four hobs at full power at the same time - as generally you won't. So 50A actually becomes 10...

Supply & Fit Replacement Consumer Units - Reasonable?

I don't think £75 to fully test and inspect 2 consumer units (how many circuits on each?) is in any way sufficient. I know it's cheaper up there, but come on! As others have said - get the test and inspect done BEFORE any work - that way you'll know what you're dealing with. Otherwise you...

    finding an electrician

you could try joining which? . This give you access to which?local - a website where which members post up trades people and rate them. Unlike rated people, trades cannot put themselves on. I don't work for which? but I have been recommended on this site, that's how I know about it. I'm not...

Basic installation testing with minimal disturbance

Sorry to jump in, but getting an EICR at change of tenancy is a point well raised. This is recommended by the IET. You might want to check your insurance policy and/or letting agent to see if it is a condition. Having only 1 tenant in a period of 6 months is no guarantee that there will be...

No neutral at the switch? No problem....

Wish I had my camera, but you get the gist.. A porch light had been added taking it's supply from existing switch - someone used their brains (by not in a good way!) and connected the N for the light to the CPC of the existing switch.... TNS system with no RCDs of course.... YIKES...
