    Restoring cast iron fire

I have just bought a wonderful Victorian tiled cast iron fire. Unfortunately the metalwaork has obviously had quite a few layers of gloss paint slapped on over the years as the detail can now only just be seen. It's quite heavy but not installed so I can take it outside though its too big to...

    Leaded light repairs

I've just bought an Edwardian property with a multitude of casement windows fitted with diamond leaded lights. The cement between the lead and the glass is crumbling away in places to a black dust but I read that the windows have to be laid flat whilst new cement dries out (with whiting to...

    Expansion gap in hot weather

I'm not really getting this expansion gap business!! I have 4 x 4m room in which to lay solid oak 20mm thick 125mm wide boards (2.2-3.6m lengths). T&G along lengths only. I've got them acclimatising in the bedroom upstairs. It's hot. Does that that mean they will expand because they...

To float or to nail solid oak?

I know its been answered before but I'm so confused so I need reassuring. I have lifted all floorboards in upstairs bedroom and replaced with 18mm OSB. As per previous advice, I have screwed them all down nicely with expansion gaps between the boards. I was proposing to float my solid oak...

    Farrow and Ball floor paint

Has anyone used Farrow and Ball floor paint. I have been renovating the staircase and having stripped back years of gunk to bare wood primed as they advised with their pink stain blocker primer. The first coat of floor paint felt really watery and runny and has not covered the pink of the...

Filling gaps on stairs prior to painting edges of treads

I am in the process of decorating my staircase prior to the installation of a carpet runner with a 15cm gap each side which will be painted white eggshell. I have stripped (with a hot air gun) the years of paint and sticky black stuff (what is it?) and will now sand down prior to priming etc...

Bricks on lathe and plaster ceiling

That makes sense. But ... the bricks??? Can I take it that there appears to be no structural reason for their presence. I know it sounds crazy but I was wondering if for some sort of balance it was deemed necessary to have some weight pushing the ceiling down in certain areas.

Bricks on lathe and plaster ceiling

We're talking 3 whole bricks between different joists. And a 6 foot long, 1" diameter iron pipe (weighs quite a bit). That would have needed some big floorboard gaps.

Bricks on lathe and plaster ceiling

Chimney breast hasn't been removed (though opening was blocked up). But for that or the window there would have been no need to remove floorboards on the opposite side of the room so that bricks and bars could have been dropped onto the ceiling below. Their position doesn't make sense. Either...

Bricks on lathe and plaster ceiling

I'm replacing the floor in my 1st floor bedroom and apart from the usual detritas resting on the lathe and plaster ceiling of the room below I've found a number of bricks and a heavy iron pipe about 6 feet long. The bricks aren't near a wall where perhaps they had been displaced making me worry...

Solid or engineered oak to ply subfloor or existing boards

The proposal is for 20mm thick 6" wide and 1.2-2.4m long solid oak T & G boards to be floated on a joist overlaid 18mm OSB subfloor (overlain with suitable underlay. Room is a first floor bedroom with no underfloor heating and one wall radiator. Manufacturer says the floor can be floated. If...

Solid or engineered oak to ply subfloor or existing boards

Not me! (Spoken to the manufaturer of the T&G solid oak I propose to lay in the bedroom and they have said it can be floated - I'll go with what they say).

What screws to fix OSB to joists

I'm so excited! 20 boards of 18mm 1200 x 2400 OSB arriving at 8.00am with just me to get them to the first floor. I've pre-booked the hernia clinic!

What screws to fix OSB to joists

Thanks very much for the replies. Screws sorted. Re the chipboard question, I only really saw reference to it being used for light use in lofts and was a bit worried about using it in a bedroom. Too late now anyway, spent an age trying to find smartply and have ordered it now!

What screws to fix OSB to joists

No. Not the attic. This is bedroom in an Edwardian house. I can see why my question raises more questions. Currently very sawn cracked and split floorboards. I want replace with some nice oak flooring laid in the same direction as the existing boards. BUT I also want to introduce some...
