What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

OK, I was quoting the guidance notes that are contained in the Approved Document P, rather than the regulation listing itself, so apologies for not being specific enough with the quote. BUT... The guidance notes do support the bizarre example I was trying to make - that extending a circuit is...

What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

But doesn't the BR does say something that has similar implication though in different words to those quoted by saxondale: "However work is notifiable ony it is involves fixed wiring and the installation of a new circuit or the extension of a circuit in a kitchen or special location or...

Maybe of interest to competent DIYers...

Surely the BCO's job is to apply his/her judgement when passing/failing all sorts of building control issues. This being just one of them. My point is that the BCO has taken a calculated "risk" that Dippy's is competent and that his competence is adequately demonstrated. Accepting...

Standby Power & Plugin 'Smart' Meters?

Obviously as energy prices go up, the breakeven point for paying for 'intelligent automation' to reduce running costs shifts towards automation. I know in my house, just having a PIR turn the telly off when there was no-one in the room would probably save it's own cost in a year. That's...

Standby Power & Plugin 'Smart' Meters?

I've recently bought one of those plug-in power meters (effectively a packaged version of your hacked multimeter), for a very similar purpose - know which devices have "suprising" power requirements (either more or less than expected). Two suprises I've had so far (only had the thing 3 days)...

    Floorboard removal

Surely houses from the 60s/70s are likely to have "virgin floorboards". My parents house dates from the mid 60's and I know they've never had more than 1 job done in that time that meant lifting any boards.

Planning new boiler & heating zones

So a ZV connected to my 'heating control' (timer & thermometer and big "you are killing the planet" neon) should comply building regs and also still be compliant if I move out and "dumb down" the system with a timer & stat (or prog room stat, I guess). [wheras using a TRV actuator with...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

No big budgets for the very expensive toys I'm afraid, but in small steps I think I can achieve most of this. The first step is getting the heating zoned when the boiler is changed. Initially the valves can be driven by simple stats, but they are only volt-free on-offs which quickly I'll...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Long story short, but an actuator I am looking at is made by Sauter. The long story is that the intention is to control it by some extra-low-voltage automation kit and the HA vendor re-sells this particular actuator. Another plus is that it is supposed to fit in place of a "normal" TRV (TRV4...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Oh, and dont worry... I'm not going to DIY the project ...! Too much risk we'll have a swimming pool instead of a conservatory! The plumbing will be done by a pro, but in the context of a bigger bit of refurb/redecoration. I'm trying to work out what we want but also with some realism...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Bengasman, I agree with you on regs -- good or bad they are there & unless we move to another country (and different regs) they are they to be adheared to. When our plumber looked at the boiler a few months ago he didn't mention that we couldn't have a rad in the conservatory - or maybe I'm...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Hi Bengasman, I've read up a little on needing conservatories to be separately controlled, but are you saying that "separately controlled" required 100% seperate pipe work from the boiler to the rad & back ?? Surely not??. The reason for wanting to zone off the conservatory is to...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Dont you worry ... accessibility is definately an important part of the brief! The existing CH zone valve died during the freezing spell in december. Took me 30 minutes just to take the motor head off because its mounted with the fixing screw just 2 inches off the floor and behind 2 other...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

is there any other (sensible) way to eliminate possible back flow? it's just that having the conserv rad 2m from the boiler, it seems such a "win" if there is any way to avoid taking it all the way back to the airing cupboard!

Planning new boiler & heating zones

So if we had a return out of the conserv rad back to the common return in the airing cupboard then we could still take the flow to the conserv rad from "close to" the boiler? (this would mean 1 extra pipe back to the airing cupboard and not 2).

Planning new boiler & heating zones

The airing cupboard already has the existing flows (because the boiler will be where the existing one is), though I'm not certain if they are 22mm or 28mm. They do already go back, same size, to the boiler. I was hoping the flowing pipes would need no changes as that obviously increases...

Planning new boiler & heating zones

Hi, As soon as it gets warm enough in 2008 to turn off the CH, we'll be getting a new boiler to replace the 10yr old one that was fitted to the house before it was extended & had a loft conversion.. ie it's old, inefficient, noisey and undersized. Originally we were looking for just a...

    Smoke alarms

Presumably they are best on their own cct, is then the lighting cct method an "acceptable compromise" when retro-fitted ?? If they are on their own cct, are they normally on the rcd side or not? (slightly OT the original question, but it's always good to learn... )

    Achieving Part P

Trouble is, I suspect most of us "joe bloggs" that do actually talk to LABC & comply are most likely to be the ones that are also conscientous & competant (small c) enough to do the job safely. I'd bet that the people doing jobs (either DIY or ... charging...) that are done in a dangerous way...

Zone valve -- 2 or 3 port / mid or divertor?

It currently does - though not really very well - we ensure the timer is setup so that CH & HW do not overlap). HOWEVER, the zoning will be done when we get a new (slightly bigger) boiler fitted.... So yes, the idea would be the boilder WOULD cope with all 4 Z at once.
