How do you know the power is off without testing the terminals of the FCU?

I'd be very interested how they think you could carry out the proper safe isolation procedure on an FCU without unscrewing it from the wall :roll: To be fair to watchdog they said the "electrician" was not a member of a self certification scheme and he had not applied to the LABC in advance...

I've got an ancient arc welder with a poor duty cycle. I fitted a 4" bathroom extractor fan into the back of it and it welds for ages now before the thermal overload operates.

Not like you to be wrong winston :roll: They do not consume any electricity when they are not charging. I've fitted a few. Customers love them and so far I've had no failures.

A great example of how a little knowledge is dangerous.

When looking at the rating of contactors it'll say something like: 20 (3) A The first number is how much resistive load it can switch. The second number in brackets is how much inductive load it can switch. SON floodlights and the like are inductive loads.

That's because they are transformers, and no amount of protesting by winston will change that.

How can it be both? Did you say to the electrician "I want the best quality transformers and don't mind paying two or three times more money than you quoted me for them"?

Did the brand of transformers the electrician installed differ from the brand which you specified?

If they're not connected to anything at either end just leave them coiled up. No need to terminate them at all.

I've got a UV filter for my pond which takes a 55W 1200mm lamp. Unfortunately the ballast has burnt out and failed shorted to earth. Ballasts for 1500mm 58W tubes are readily available and cheap. Will the additional 3W rating cause an issue or do I need to try and source a 55W ballast?

They are transformers.

Fit LED GU10s. They last for ages and ages, give a nicer light than CFLs, are at full brightness as soon as you switch them on, and you won't have to adapt or replace your existing fittings.

Hi westie can you tell us what and how a three phase balancer does what it does? I'm just curious about this side of electrics which I don't know much about.
