    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

Not at all, John, I'm sorry if I have given that impression. As far as I can see the plumbing is already bonded to the main earthing point with the exception of the short length to the outside tap. The photograph of the meter cupboard that I added to my reply to your first post shows numerous...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

There is one short length of plastic pipe and that is where the outside tap is tapped into a spur off the incoming main. Other than that all the pipework that I can see is copper. It will be a simple matter to connect the two copper lengths via a suitable length of earth cable.

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

I take your point Harry, however whilst I have worked in electronics in the security industry I don't have the particular knowledge to be sure of doing more detailed specialist testing. I could buy or hire the instruments but I'd be the chap with all the gear and no idea! Thanks for your...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

'Instrument' is overstating the sophistication of the device. It's a plug-in tester with a set of LEDs that light in a pattern confirming the presence of earth, live, neutral and the correct connection of the L & N. As for continuity, I haven't got a Megger or any specific electricians' tester...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

Good grief John, what a full answer! Thank you for taking the time. The house is c.1968 as far as I know. It is the last in a row of detached houses and has a field adjacent in green belt and AONB. The supply is underground and the wiring is quite complex - although modern c/w RCDs and current...

    Copper Corrosion on incoming main

Thread revival! I have exactly the same problem as the original poster - in the Chilterns so near Berkshire and also with very hard water. I am fascinated by the possibility of galvanic corrosion because our incoming main sprung a leak on Christmas night in 2013. A local Thames Water approved...

Waterproof jointing for paving slabs (flagstones)

Thanks Mikeey84, you're right about the flashing, there is no fall and it was pouring in through there after the flags were re-laid. I have pumped several tubes of lead sealant under the edge and that seems to have fixed that leak. It seems that mortar is too brittle and it separates from the...

    Waterproof wide joint patio grout

As you might have seen in my question, I have a similar problem. https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/waterproof-jointing-for-paving-slabs-flagstones.567896/ May I ask whether you found a suitable solution?

Waterproof jointing for paving slabs (flagstones)

I have a paved balcony over part of a garage. It was relaid and a new balustrade fitted but the builder (now defunct) persuaded me that a coat or two of Cromapol would work as well as a membrane at keeping water from penetrating to the garage below. Needless to say it did not. Despite...

    Leaking balcony over garage problem

Thanks ted456 I am grateful for the candid view. Redoing that which was already done should be carried out at the cost of the original contractor, but as is all too common, the company was a Will O'the Wisp with no financial substance and has since been liquidated, folded its tents and stolen...

    Leaking balcony over garage problem

Also posted in 'General' as I don't know what section it belongs in. I have a flat roof over part of my garage and it doubles as a balcony. It is laid on concrete structural beams forming the garage roof and comprises flagstones grouted/pointed with mortar so it is stable. It was relaid about...

    Leaking balcony over garage problem

Thank you, foxhole, for your prompt reply. I shall note that suggestion as it does look from the website as if it would sort the leak. I would, however, prefer a clear coating if possible. I'm not bothered if it darkens the surface or makes it glossy, but a solid colour might look a bit...

    Leaking balcony over garage problem

I have a flat roof over part of my garage and it doubles as a balcony. It is laid on concrete structural beams forming the garage roof and comprises flagstones grouted/pointed with mortar so it is stable. It was relaid about seven years ago but no rubber or other membrane was installed between...

    Trying to identify roof tiles.

I don't know where you're based, but there's an architectural reclamation yard in Stokenchurch, west of High Wycombe, and they will very probably be able to help. The rarer they are, the dearer, obviously. I almost bought a house in south Buckinghamshire some years ago and those tiles were on...

Overflowing gutter - blocked down pipe

Not when its festering corpse is blocking the downpipe it's not! Nor when it's gnawing through your electrical cables and starting a fire, or fighting in the loft for hours on end it's not! Cute otherwise though, but remember that Romans used to eat them as snacks. :)

Overflowing gutter - blocked down pipe

There's a mesh laid in the gutters but the little blighter obviously pulled the last few inches up and crawled underneath. They look for a place to hibernate in the autumn and I suspect this poor little bugger chose the wrong one. Imagine the panic being stuck head-first in a slippery...

Overflowing gutter - blocked down pipe

A fairly short run of gutter on my house started to overflow in heavy rain recently. It's along a part of the house that I don't often walk along even in the dry, and as I avoid doing so when it's wet it obviously could have been blocked for a while. It's allegedly run in to a soakaway (so the...
