    Loft office insulation

Roof has wooden slats, no felt/membrane. For the new floor I was thinking of using 100mm celotex cut in between the new noggins. Partly because it's better then the blown fibre stuff I have and partly because I'm assuming this means I don't have to lay it over chicken wire. Whilst BCO aren't...

    Loft to office 'conversion'

Got a few more joists in over the past few days. Cut the first couple of sections from the ceiling binder too and strapped the ceiling joists to the new floor joists roughly in line with where the binder was - all good so far! The angle drill is AMAZING!! Don't know how I've lived without one...

    Loft to office 'conversion'

I've started in the bottom right corner of the loft (as per pic in first post) Progress was slow, mostly because I was too lazy to clear the area properly but it's starting to make sense. Already feeling nice and solid. The new joists sit on top of 4x2 that sits on the existing wall plate on...

    Loft to office 'conversion'

..following on from my thread http://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/posh-loft-new-floor-questions.437380/ thought I'd start up a project progress thread with some pics. Have a pretty large loft space with good height to play with. It's hipped on all sides with a chalet style slope at the front (2...

Posh loft - new floor questions

OK so I went option 3. By the time I raised the new joists a little (to avoid any contact with the ceiling) there wasn't much meat left to bolt to the 4x2s and I just thought it better to leave them as undisturbed as possible. The new joists sit nicely on some 4x2 that sits on the wall plate...

Posh loft - new floor questions

See attached pic .... Red = walls (all solid either steel supported on 1st floor or all the way to ground) Blue = Ceiling joists Green = Ceiling binders where the ceiling has a large span I've selected 8x2" C24 timber based upon the spans I need. 3 options as far as I see it. - Go 90 deg to...

    soil pipe vent regs?

..sorry to drag this one up seems relevant. What if the soil stack is around the corner from a window < 3m away? Does the 3m still count? Or is it 3m from any window on the same elevation? Thanks!

New loft floor .. comments / suggestions please!

..do you mean do this to replace the binders? Thinking about it I won't be able to noggin ceiling joists as my new floor joists will be in the way - nuts! Looks like I have no choice but to bolt my ceiling joists to new floor joists then noggin the floor ones together as originally planned...

New loft floor .. comments / suggestions please!

Even if I'm not planning on connecting the ceiling joists to the new floor joists? The plan was to keep them apart so no new loads were places on the ceiling joists at all. Cheers, Monty

New loft floor .. comments / suggestions please!

After more thought the only option would be to run the joists back to front, with the end cut and wall plate raised they will rest OK and I'll bolt to the rafter too just to be sure. ...only real issues now surrounds the ceiling binder and how to get rid of it. Can I noggin the ceiling...

..and then hang a new ceiling from them presumably? Not an option for us, too much upheaval, but an interesting option - thanks :) Monty

New loft floor .. comments / suggestions please!

Evening all, would REALLY appreciate some help on the following. First off, basic floor plan of the loft: Hard lines are the walls on the first floor underneath, joists on the first floor landing run left to right so does that mean the central wall running front to back is 'load...

    Strengthen loft floor

Hi all, Posted something similar before but this time I have pics and measurements!! Ceilings are cracking due to me storing too much stuff in the loft so I'd like to strengthen the loft floor by installing new joists to sit a floor onto, might end up using it as an occasional work space...

Best adhesive for sticking down 5mm ply onto chipboard

Screw, dont staple/nail. I initially nailed some ply as an underlay before putting down wood floors .. was creaking like a crazy thing even before I got to laying the real floor. M

DIY conversion of loft into bonus room

..forgot I'd posted this, thanks for the reply ! I've spoken to a builder and have come up with the following: - Fit velux window - Lay 55mm space board throughout loft - Lay 18mm chipboard panels on top of space board - Pin rockwool to roof slats between rafters - Put insulation...

DIY conversion of loft into bonus room

Hi all, I'm considering making the loft into a bonus room. It wont be built to regs or used for a bedroom. Nor will it have bathroom etc.. So basically I plan to put a couple of Velux windows up there and board/insulate the floor and roof. Few questions: - I've been quoted £1100...
