Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Rads only get hot when water and CH turned on. Valve works perfectly well as you can hear it swith over when the different modes are selected. It's just that the pump doesn't switch on unless the water is turned on. The wall stat is turned up high and is in a cold hall way.

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

If I have the timer set so that only the heating (rads) side is swithed on, all that happens is that the honywell valve switches to the radiator position and nothing else - the pump stays swithed off, along with the boiler. The pump / boiler only switch on when the hot water side of the...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

I turned the rads of one by one as the weather improved. I could just have the timer set to water only as you say - same thing as far as the pump is concerned. I can't remember where the bypass valve was to be perfectly honest as I turned it on and off a long time ago without realising...

How to flatten walls in prep for large tiles

Thanks for the reply. I've heard that B& Q are not a good place to buy plaster from as it is often very old and therefore goes off much faster than new plaster that hasn't sat in stock for a long time? Is this true, and if so, where is a good place to buy it from and what size bag should I...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Anyway...... Pump draws water away from the vent pipe. I'll try the trick of blocking off the vent and see what happens. I've tried to identify the noise some more. When all the gate valves are closed preventing anything flowing from the pump, it goes silent and runs super smoothly...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

The pump is vertically mounted from a T piece that joins the supply / vent tube about half way up the airing cupboard. The feed / vent pipe then goes about 5 feet up into the loft and into the top of the header tank

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Right then - so I've got a fully pumped system with a crude hit and miss bypass for when the system is run on 'water only' Which is noisy because it's working too hard with the bypass closed?

How to flatten walls in prep for large tiles

Hi, I'm in the middle of re-doing my en-suite from the ground up. My problem is the walls in the shower area. They are not straight at all and I'm going to be fitting 40cm x 30cm tiles which at the moment will look a mess unless the wall is flattened. If I lay a long steel ruler accross...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Whilst the pump was droaning away last night, I turned the wall stat in the hall down low to see if it switched the pump off but it didn't. Does that in anyt way help establish the nature of the system?

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

I'm a bit confused to be honest and still can't figure out why my pump is noisy when the rads are turned off or the system is programmed to water only etc

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Sorry guys, on my first post, I meant the stat on the cylinder. Noise is definately the pump - no question. You can hear the drone throuout the house, and as soon as you open the airing cupboard door, it's right in your face. Not sure what a fully pumped system looks like, but the pump...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Well I never knew that.... Is that standard practice in "normal, traditional, standard" systems from the last couple of decades then?

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Wow, this really is showing my ingnorance. I thought that the header tank in the loft was the gravity bit... I feel foolish amongst experts. So, if I understand correctly, if I turn my wall thermostat down (which has been cleverly mounted in the cold and draughtly hall way by my front door)...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

Ah.... on closer inspection of the pipework, I appear to have a bypass. I was never sure what it did. I opened it fully once and all that happened was that my water didn't get hot. Is it a case of trial and error to just crack it open enough to prevent the pump labouring but not enough to...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

That sounds exactly like what I need. Where does it fit? If it is needed due to the inherent design of the system, why wasn't one installed when the house was built? Ah yes, I forgot... sorry. Still, at least with it being a new house all the walls are square, the beams equi-spaced, the...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

I haven't got rad stats because the profiteers who built my modern (1991) cardboard / weetabix construction house built it to a price, erm, sorry, built it to a profit and used the cheapest and nastiest rad valves that could possibly be bought before the opening of China. The pipes that feed...

Why does my pump get noisy when rads are turned off?

I have a standard gravity fed, traditional boiler CH system in my two story house. In the winter when the rads are switched on, the pump opperates silently. As the weather warms up and we start to turn rads of in various rooms, the more rads we turn off, the noiser the pump gets. Now it...

    18mm plumbing fittings

Hello - sorry my first post is a tricky one but..... Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of 18mm fittings, whether they are push fit, compression, yorkshire, end feed isn't important. I need a 22mm to 18mm reducer and or elbow. The Hudson Reed shower head is 18mm whilst...
