Is there a problem with Fernox products?

Has anyone come accross this? In January I cleaned flushed & protected my CH system with Fernox DS40, Protector, & Silencer. Later I notice the DHW isnt coming on. After much grief Ive nailed the fault to the pressure differential switch in my Vailllant - there's a thick oily/greasy goo...

PLease Help! Boiler not igniting until HW flow full on!

which for washing in the kitchen sink is OK, but useless for the mixer shower which keeps going stone cold!! My family now hate their nice new shower (which cost more than I budgeted for...)! Can anyone advise what I should do? The boiler is a Vaillant Turbomax 282e, & I recently...

Best method for cleaning & renovating vinyl flooring?

I have three dental surgery rooms all fitted with white vinyl flooring. It's wall to wall, and very hardwearing, but over the years it has become dull & scratched, mostly with feet, but in some areas, tiny fragments of dental amalgam. Three years ago the floors were hand scrubbed with soap &...

Solid Oak Flooring - Needs sanding and Resealing - Help reqd

If scratching & scuffing isnt too bad, use a handheld machine. But you may find a few deeper gouges which you can sand out by hand, laborious but worth it. And dress it properly afterwards, follow tin instructions to the letter. Or for quickness use a big floor sander, but be prepared to...

Relcaimed flooring, good idea ? .....

You might have a few problems with warped boards, but easily overcome. Make sure you properly acclimatise the wood in the room. A far nastier problem is recalimed boards that were not originally actaully used as floorboards. Unless the wood has had years of compression by walking &...

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

I have 2 bypass rads, but - solution in sight - it must be the water. Today I fitted a rad in the loo. Turned it on, hisses as loud as all the others.

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

Thanks croydon, I'm not sure about that - it might reduce the flow rate but not the pressure, so less water will be going through per minute, but still at the same speed, & I reckin it's the speed of the water doing it. Hence slowing the pump might work, but I cant do this. And it's clear to...

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

thank Slugbabydotcom but it all looks like I have to fit new valves. I will run descaler through for a week first, just in case.

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

I thought I recalled being told not to reduce pump speed, thanks! I just listened to the boiler, its very quiet, so it looks like a whole lot of new TRVs for me. Or perhaps I can just renew the pin/valve assembly & keep the thermostat? Is this doable? Or worth it? 10 years life...

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

Sorry Softus - boiler is Vaillant turbomax 242e (or 282, im not at home so cant remember) 6 rads with TRV, 1 with open lockshield, all new system in 1996, pressured to 1.5bar. Dosed with Fernox DS40, restorer & silencer in Nov 2001. Rad water smells vaguely of fish.

    noisy pipes

Turn cistern supply off, dissessamble the valve - if black diaphragm is easily scratched, its worn out - replace it, reassamble.

    Hissing Honeywell TRVs

I have a 7 rad system, 10 years old, all with Honeywell TRVs - when rooms warm up & valves approach closing, some of them have a very prolonged period (hours) of the valve hissing: well not hissing exactly, but you can hear fluid running/(squeezing?) through them. I have many theories, but...

Adjusting an uneven doorstop - should I even try?

Thanks to all! Router & chisel it is then - I dont have a bullnose plane but I remember them now from school. In the days when teachers taught you how to make a dovetail joint, not a screw or glue in sight!!

Adjusting an uneven doorstop - should I even try?

I was about to hang new hardwood front door, to replace existing 'thin' one. But the door stop is deeper on one side than the other, so at the moment I havw a good fit on lock side, & gap on hinge side. As new door is thicker, I will have a loverly tight hinge fit, but door will sit proud on...

Help! Capacitor burnt out on a halogen transformer

It's a nice wire square one in a metal cage & ten fused outputs, been in use almost every day for 14 years, I think it just had enough. One of the bulbs failed recently, & its replacement did the same last week. But 50p & 5 minutes is better than £200 & hours of fun rewiring so I'll get...
