Buying first home - crumbling bricks below damp course

A problem we will see alot more of in a few decades judging by the crappy materials used these days in new houses. Houses have at last become disposable like everything else.

Upside down / upstairs living pros and cons

You will be spending most of the time in/ and going back and forth to kitchen, living room, bathroom etc so it would be more logical to have them downstairs for easier access, unless you need to lose weight.

    Sandblasting

Depends on its size. You would need something substantial for blasting the side of a house. I have a cheap siphon sandblaster and 3hp compressor to clean up metal. It would take me a year to sand blast a building with it.

    retaining wall

Agreed. Fortunately the only thing that goes in front of that wall is two cars. Its more likely he'll pay through his pocket. He is aware of the problem.

    retaining wall

This might help. I did a 8ft retaining wall a year ago,. I based it on the walls of the neighbouring garden. Not the guy on the right as he only used a single layer of block the whole height and it is now cracked and leaning forward The pictures show the stages Original garden extending to...

RSJ lateral support and other questions

Thanks Tony and TMAD. I think I have everything to go ahead now. Just need the cash to start. Its irritatring that the Buiding Control costs so much, probably as much as the job will cost me. And all just to just stroll around tick a few boxes. Nice little monopoly these people have.

RSJ lateral support and other questions

Yes its under the joist. When using packing do you mean between the beam and padstone or hammered in under the padstone to push it up against the beam then push in mortar to fill any space between padstone and top of column

RSJ lateral support and other questions

Ive spent some time learning about the formula and calculations required for fitting a UB to partially replace a supporting wall. I have done the brain work and calculated what I'll need, beam size, block column size and materials and foundation etc. However my research has not been able to...

    Lead Pipe And Other Questions

The water pipe to my home is an old lead pipe which comes from under my neighbours extension. A 15mm copper pipe comes off this lead pipe then splits in two in the ground just inside my kitchen. One branch feeds my house the other goes under my kitchen and supplies my other neighbour (terraced...

    Asbestos or not

I have some old corregated roofing material in my garden that looks like asbestos but Ive been told that it could also be a type of fibrous cement material. Is there a simple test for asbestos? No quips about sniffing it and waiting 20 years :)

    Contraception

It makes sense. Moss has good antiseptic properties and used to be used for dressing woulds and was very effective at preventing infection. So it would probably work at killing sperm too.

extending slates out over gable end

Ha a slate ripper, thought there must be a tool for it. When putting the slates back at the verge do you just use the one nail hole and a hook, as one of the holes, on the inner side of the slate will be covered over by the existing slate that would over lap it. or is there a technique for...

extending slates out over gable end

Yes this is what I was getting at in my first post. How can I remove the slates along the verge without removing half the roof? If I can do this to the first two rafters I can extend the batons, felt and the slates out over the edge of the wall (natural stone). I can then use this product...
