Thanks. I do have an unvented cylinder. I should add that boiler, linked to CH only, has been working again for some time now. There doesn't appear to be a pattern to when the boiler might switch off.

I was wondering if eliminating the programmer might be a first option or is that complicating things?

That's the only valve I can find, although I would be interested to know what the attached image is showing linked to the pump. It's been hidden from my view for 13 years!
