Damp coming up from the ground?

The main water supply comes in from the front, but then travels upwards in the wall between the lounge and the kitchen (in the middle of the house), supplying the upstairs bathroom. it runs above the kitchen ceiling and comes down in the corner of the little cupboard that I'm working on, to...

Damp coming up from the ground?

No, there's no water meter. Maybe I should leave it for a while, and see if it dries out at all? If it is a leaking pipe, I suppose its a matter of taking up tiles, concrete, following the moisture?

Damp coming up from the ground?

Is it definitely a leak? Could it be damp coming up from the ground? The rotten timber was laid directly on the ground

Damp coming up from the ground?

Hi all On my day off today, I thought I'd replace a small section of the door frame in the kitchen, where it seemed to be a bit rotten at the bottom. Its an old house, and I've just been here a year. Once I took the little section off, I was that there was woodworm, and decided to take the...

Best way to fill a gap between plasterboard and wood architrave

Thanks for the link Noseall. The trouble is the plasterboard is flush with the architrave at some places, and a few mil higher in others. Ok, I think I need to do as you say and use some flat trim over both the architrave and the plasterboard

Best way to fill a gap between plasterboard and wood architrave

I'm just decorating, I can't mess about with the plasterboard . Really looking for a way to fill the hole... Would you then cut it back and caulk it?

Best way to fill a gap between plasterboard and wood architrave

I have a gap of 10-18mm on the hallway ceiling, as it meets the architrave of the landing/staircase: I was wondering how to fill it, to avoid cracking? Someone said I need plasterboard beading, but I'm not sure how I would use that? Someone else said to use scrim tape and 2 layers of...

    Damp in kitchen

I measured today - the walls are 25cm. Does this suggest cavity walls?

    Sharp corners in the shower

I decided to try out the bath for the first time. It resulted in a massive leak coming down through the kitchen ceiling downstairs. Upon investigation, I found this. That black tape is holding 2 pipes together, with a 20mm gap between them. This was done by the same builders. Unbelievable.

    Damp in kitchen

A builder came round today and agreed that the render needed a break, and a trench needs to be dug around the house wall (with a french drain installed). He also insisted that those vents above floor level, are going into the cavity in the wall, and coming out somewhere under the subfloor. Like...

    Damp in kitchen

There is a step down to the kitchen/bay area. All the houses on this street have this. The floor is part joists and beams, raised about 100mm from the ground, and then, at the end of the house, concrete. When the floorboards were up, some joists looked like they were rotting - these were the...

    Sharp corners in the shower

But were the tiles stuck on properly, or were there large air gaps behind the tiles like this?

    Sharp corners in the shower

The saga continues - I just took a tile off to see what the tiles were stuck onto. Just standard plasterboard it seems, with no waterproofing treatment at all. This is all coming down and being done with moisture resistant plasterboard, and the tiles solidly bedded into the adhesive. Good...

    Damp in kitchen

Thanks for all this info, Burnerman and Vinn. Sorry for the late reply - I've just got back from holiday. The red line in this image shows the level of the floor (from the top of floor tiles) inside the kitchen. The tiles are 20mm thick, and there's ply underneath that, so it could be that...
