Beam and Block Floor - Beam Sizes

The 150 beams will definitely be enough going on Hansons spec sheets (you could try them as a supplier as well - seem to go anywhere!) If you haven't already considered it, have a look jetfloor system if it's a ground floor - it forms both the infill block and the insulation in one. About the...

    Concrete drying: a stupid question.

LOL one all on the will it / wont it be dry. At the rate the build is progressing I doubt it's going to be too much of an issue either way, just want to make sure it's not too damp before the oak flooring goes down.

    Concrete drying: a stupid question.

Sorry, this is probably going to sound really dense... Concrete floor drying time I've seen quoted in several places as 1 inch per month - meaning that the 3 inches of concrete we have in our floor should take 3 months to dry. Is that dry in terms of "water leaving the mixture" or dry as...

    Timber type, sizes and uses

Many Thanks Woody, got em :) excellent info on the ridgeboards & hips too cheers, now just need to calc up the purlins joists and rafters - for some reason the S.E. originally specced some seriously overweight stuff due to removing the original rafters, but there is no need to remove anything...

    Timber type, sizes and uses

Due to my architect being somewhere between stupid and useless, I now have a lovely blockwork extension with walls all finished, but the need to entirely re-design the roof. So... Where can I find info on what sort of timbers will do what sort of span, and what sort of sizes are...

    external door aperture width?

hmmm so he's gone a bit bigger than a 26" door. Really didn't want the brickwork to come back down again but it's his mistake, he can cope I'm sure...

    external door aperture width?

Just got back to find all brickwork completed up to render level, awaiting start of blocks. Overall I'm happy, he's done a good job compared to a lot of brickies I've seen! Only minor problem is the door aperture for the back door - the plans show it as 900mm wide (I know, I drew them...) and...

    insurance required/ advised?

 Nothing specific, just watching him work with a petrol disc cutter has made me wince several times, wanted to make sure if he does the unthinkable I won't be liable for his wife and children's welfare.

    insurance required/ advised?

thanks - when you say "should"... is that something I need to check and ask for proof of or is it OK to work on the assumption.

    insurance required/ advised?

Due to time running out on my build I've had to face facts and get a bricky in to do the brick and block work. Just paying him a fixed price on labour to get me up to plate level. Question is - do I need, or is it advisable, to get some form of indemnity insurance in case he does something...

    Thoughts on garage construction please.

With high level beams, how does that affect floor height compared to the house one wall will be up against? Does it matter if the garage floor height is higher than the house? I've got an arbo report being prepped up - he reckons the biggest problem is the idiots at the council. They've...

    Thoughts on garage construction please.

I don't mind swallowing the cost of the S.E. for the founds, as long as I can be reasonably happy it's going to get through planning! He's asked for basic decisions first obviously so he doesn't head off in the wrong direction.

    Thoughts on garage construction please.

I'd like to propose a double garage attaching to our house to the planning peeps, but not sure on how / method of /construction (which they'd like to see due to various factors). Basically it needs to be as light as possible, have as small a foundation as possible, but also tie in with the...

    Render product?

Bugger, think he did say acrylic - though K-rend sounded familar. LOL oh well, bricky reckons it's 15mm odd backset either way now.

    Render product?

Yeah I think that was it! Cheers :D I was told it would be a bit more expensive, but that it doesn't require maintenance (a serious plus side to me - can't stand heights and can't look up, so painting a 2 storey house is no fun :p ) I'll try and get some quotes.

    Render product?

Doesn't ring a bell, and looking at their website doesn't appear to be pre-coloured so would need painting.

    Render product?

yeah I tried that, unfortunately that amongst most phrases with the word "render" in come up with software for 3D graphics, and I already have software for that :p Was hoping a few brand names might help.

    Render product?

While I was getting various quotes in, one of the builders mentioned an "advanced" render in place of cement that was self coloured and didn't crack like cement render - only the piece of paper with it written on has gone astray. Any idea's what he might have been referring to? Want to check...

Flooring - applying concrete screed & DPM

got a couple of questions on my floor... First off, the system I'm using calls for 75mm screed using "C25 concrete with 50mm slump reinforced with polypropylene fibre tamped and floated". 2 companies I've contacted have said they can't do it because of the material used - is C25 with 50mm...
