Getting in a muddle regarding ventilation- am i making things worse?

Thanks, i dont know why i am stressing over things so much lately, i think its because i had so many problems with a dodgy tradesman when i started refurbing (he smashed a water pipe with a hammer and didnt tell me, i discovered it after he left) If i need a ridge vent installing, i will do-...

Getting in a muddle regarding ventilation- am i making things worse?

Thanks, yeh he only put 4 vents in (they are rectangular, and about 20cm by 20cm with a grille and an insect mesh behind the grille) I guess the idea that somehow air intake from 4 tiny vents with the wind restriction of the grille and insect mesh would somehow create massive upwards pressure...

Getting in a muddle regarding ventilation- am i making things worse?

I probably explained myself poorly. There is a vent on top of the roof, it is connected to the metal flue which runs all the way down to my gas fire (now removed but that is besides the point). The roofer was suggesting that somehow the vent on the roof would act as both a vent for the flue...

Getting in a muddle regarding ventilation- am i making things worse?

Thats what i thought, that the metal flue would be fitted to the vent and lead to the gas fire so it couldnt act as an attic vent as well There is definitely no other box on the roof, and no gable vent- i am just concerned that having these soffit vents added might actually make the issue worse...

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

Thats the plan yeh i am having it done in 12 months, with the second electrician To be honest i have spent thousands this year - with variable quality tradesmen and as a result i have lost some confidence in my own decision making.

Getting in a muddle regarding ventilation- am i making things worse?

Hey all I am trying to fix a tonne of stuff on a 1970's house i recently got a financial interest in, but i do wonder if i am making things worse with the decisions i make! I was in the loft recently, and i noticed a touch of condensation (i did feel some air movement in the attic but not a...

Wow, so- in simple terms modern CU give improved protection against electrocuting myself with faulty equipment / exposed wires etc.

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

That looks similar to mine except not mcb...and it is interesting as the last electrician said he hadnt seen one in 20 years! (wylex) I want a CU, and can afford that (the guy who wanted cash and no bank transfers said im looking 400-600 which is fine even if it was double that) but the...

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

Well i am unsure what to do now I have had 3 electricians in the house now. The first guy was qualified but wasnt registered and i was going to proceed and get work separately checked. However it turned out he wanted to do everything from start to finish purely in cash, and i am not comfortable...

    Ancient cabling

Weight off my mind and can get it plastered up and forget about it and get consumer unit sorted- unfortunately this guy is booked for 2 months or i would hire him in a flash. Still cant believe he wouldnt take payment. He just said it was on his way home and only took 5 mins so no need. Thanks...

    Ancient cabling

Local electrician came out today Waved a wand at my live sockets then waved it at my ancient cabling, pronounced it dead, went into the airing cupboard etc to 'just be safe; and opened up the flex socket which was dead and also had a quick look at my wiring and bonding- tidied up the cabling for...

Gouge in gas pipe before meter. Ignore?

I remember when i had plastering work done, i was eyeballing the plasterboards which the plasterer had leaned against my steel piping When he say me eyeballing them he moved them but said 'i would need to take a hammer to them to damage them ' :)

Gouge in gas pipe before meter. Ignore?

Thanks so much!, i am doing my wifes head in noticing all these things, they feel about half a millimetre deep and i have no idea how thick the piping is But they havent leaked in 20 years, and the plumber who does my yearly boiler service always looks at the pipes, i need to just relax, thanks...

Gouge in gas pipe before meter. Ignore?

Hey all just a quickie I have been paying a lot more attention to things since starting DIY, and was checking the main gas pipe leading to the meter About 3 feet up, above where the plastic ends i noticed these gouges, to be honest they may have been there 20 years! The gouge seems to go under...

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

This is a great post, and explains to me why people would let their registration lapse, especially if doing more site work sub contracted than specific domestic work. It does seem however from reading this that i have to factor in a fee to notify LABC that i am having the work done - i am...

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

Thanks all, he is coming next week to assess the electrics then ill ask about the points raised here One thing that bugged me a bit, with our old wylex style cartridges. When he rewired a light for us, he pulled the light switch cartridges first- but didnt turn the main power off before...

    Ancient cabling

Ok i just had another look in the airing cupboard (which isnt exactly above the breast but is almost above it) - the airing cupboard is where i have a combi boiler and there is some obsolete piping going into the loft (tank was drained by plumber who put combi in but left in situ) I found this...

Updating electrics. NICEIC - complete rewire.

Yes he said i would most likely need a bonding upgrade, he pointed out some of my bonding (a green/yellow cable connected to the gas and water etc) but i cant remember why it needs upgrading As for certification he said that upon completion of work i would get a full electrical cert, but thanks...
