    removing brick over veranda

I've decided that's the only way I can do it, the pipe will come thru at an angle also so a neat hole straight thru won't work, just need the damn rain to stop so I can get up over the glass roof

    removing brick over veranda

The problem is that the bricks will wreck a drill bit, some drill reasonably easily & others get halfway thru & seem to hit something inside that starts to burn the tip, the bricks have a brindled pattern The bloke who fitted our boiler flue a while back had a big circular cutter & burned two...

    Outside stop cock seized

Ours turned but wouldn't shut off the water properly ( 1950') & we had the same problem with the one in the house so we wanted to renew the indoor one which was awkwardly at floor level. In an attempt to turn the pavement one a bit tighter the T bar broke off so we started to panic as we only...

    Replacing a heat-only boiler with a combi - advice please !!

My sister has a recently fitted combi & altho it's a good make it's failed 3 times in 12 months. Biggest problem is that when it breaks down she has no alternative option for hot water as there is no longer an immersion heater as of course there is no hot water cylinder.

    removing brick over veranda

I need to make a hole for 4" pipe thru a cavity wall which is over a veranda, what's the best way to carefully remove enough brick to get the pipe thru? The bricks are an incredibly hard 1950' type , is it best to try drilling out some of the old pointing till I can work a brick loose?

    How much do i charge

Plumbers are pricing themselves out of the market, some want more for an hours work than many people get for a whole day. This will just push more and more people to attempt DIY inc. gas work

    boiler scrappage scheme

So the answer to this question is if you have an old boiler & it's working well why rip it out & chance that the new one will be as reliable? Wait till it packs up & then consider a new one, What do combi owners do when it packs up & they can't put an immersion heater on that's what I...

Problem with Ideal Elan 2 - Hot Water Setting

Presumably your heating circuit is 22mm or old 3/4" & the smaller piping is 15mm or older 1/2". Check if your hot cylinder has got a bleed screw where the pipe enters the coil, older systems often had one, it may be hard to see, my old tank had just a small screw in the brass fitting which I...

Problem with Ideal Elan 2 - Hot Water Setting

You only have 15mm pipe going to the cylinder instead of 22mm? if so that seems odd, sounds like there is a blockage of some kind, our new boiler has 22mm pipes for the whole circuit. Is there a 15mm pipe connected directly to the 3 way valve or does it drop to smaller pipe elsewhere?

    boiler scrappage scheme

Luddites, lol the average lifespan of a new low-mid range boiler is 7 -10 years compared to old boilers lasting 20 -30 years, a top of the range boiler probably won't last a lot longer either & the cost of repairing older boilers is lower because they have far less complicated parts...

    getting an apprentice

When you work as a sole trader you can do what you like regarding health & safety, if you want to crawl up a roof ladder instead of scaffolding etc you would probably do it, no need to insist on a proper loft ladder /lighting & handrail etc when indoors as my recent plumbers did. But as soon as...

    boiler scrappage scheme

So in theory the government extends the over 60's £300 boiler discount to all & sundry or a similar type scheme. We are told we can save £150 on our gas bills with a nice new boiler but how much is it all going to cost inc the discount ? £1500 ? £2000+ taking into account the latest...

    What Cylinder size?

Another factor is how hot the water is heated to, When we looked at our new hot cylinder we thought it looked rather small & were worried it might empty filling a bath & indeed it probably would take quite a lot of it . However we soon realised that if the water is really hot then it would need...
