How about an OAP scrappage scheme, dunno set the bat at 70 / 75. £2000 for each OAP to be scrapped?

So in theory the government extends the over 60's £300 boiler discount to all & sundry or a similar type scheme.
We are told we can save £150 on our gas bills with a nice new boiler but how much is it all going to cost inc the discount ? £1500 ? £2000+ taking into account the latest regulations regarding position of flue etc & other requirements I can see the only one to benefit would be the installer
How many years will it take me to recoup the £1500 -£2000 I just spent replacing my old/ uneconomic but nevertheless reliable boiler ?
At least 10 years probably & how long are modern boilers expected to last? Hmmm

10 years, would be very good, brilliant even, but in truth, if it hasn't had a major expenditure, totaling at least the appliance cost in that time, you are very, very lucky.
Lets talk about my boiler
again, 30 year old and going strong 24 hours a day, and comes on when the temperature is below the set point and goes off when it ain't. Would I save £150.00 a year, or more to the point anything. I say my gas usage will be no different with a new boiler, and it could even be higher, and for my troubles I get a tin can that's as reliable as an MP is honest.
The only ones that will benefit from a scrappage scheme, will be fat cats and manufacturers.
Mick Williams at Williams & Co plumber’s merchants has started a petition to encourage the Government to adopt a boiler scrappage scheme along the lines of the Government’s recently announced car scrappage plan.

So that'll be £200 off the full retail price, no further discounts will apply, just like the cars....
this idea has no chance at all
the car idea is an attempt to keep thousands off people from being made redundant by stimulating car sales
the boiler sceme although well intentioned in an enviromental way will not help the job situation so will not work

Couldn't agree more. My Ideal boiler is 32 years old and has never given any bother aside from a couple of thermocouples. Any savings (and I bet they are few and far between) on a new boiler would be well outweighed by the cost of a new boiler and installation (including having the floors up to put in a bigger bore supply pipe no doubt).

Anyone who says a new boiler wouldn't save them money/fuel is a luddite. The science/technology is well proven and although the amount saved will vary a 32 year old boiler is well past its best and it's heat exchanger will probably burst on christmas day; you won't be gloating then.
Fact is a top of the range modern boiler, correctly installed is very, reliable; I would expect the first 5 yrs to be fault free provided it's serviced correctly.
Do those with very old boilers still have balck and white tv's, single glazing, landlines but no mobile phone etc etc?
It's called progress I believe.

Luddites,lol the average lifespan of a new low-mid range boiler is 7 -10 years compared to old boilers lasting 20 -30 years, a top of the range boiler probably won't last a lot longer either & the cost of repairing older boilers is lower because they have far less complicated parts.
Presuming I have an old but working boiler explain how having a new boiler will 'save me money' If I have to lash out £2000 -£3000 +?

that might be the average age for an ideal boiler that doesn't ever get serviced but good quality boilers and good quality servicing will keep you good for 15+years.
I'm not gonna get involved in an argument about recuperating costs because its entirely dependant on the situation so no one is right or wrong.

What a load of tosh 7 to 10 years.....Far far longer i remember the vcw sine 18 entering this country around 1982 and people being told it wont last long. still loads about

I'm saying if you put an identical sized boiler alongside mine, the gas consumption will be no better and must likely more.
