30 year old ideal e type rs balanced flue boiler

This is an excellent boiler, keep it as long as you can. Gas valve is Honeywell V4700E and is readily available, about £70 at your local friendly boiler spares merchant or less on ebay.

    Fault finding Boiler/Actuator/Pump

sw/l is the switched live connection at the boiler from the cylinder and room stats and the motorised valve when activated, ie. the signal for the boiler to fire from the external controls.

replace boiler or keep existing ?

There are several problems with older boilers. They are easy to fix, most parts are readily available and they last too long. Keep the one you've got for as long as you can; better for you, better for the environment.

    no hot water

..."no motorised valves as far i can see," Heating is OK, so you have hot water from the boiler as far as the HW/CH tee. There is heat on the rad side but not the HW side of the tee, but no MV on the tee?

    Gravity H/w airlock problem..

Do you have boiler manual, it will show location drain valve. Well you can try rad drain valve. If it blows any crud into the f&e tank you will need to scoop it out. Excess water will exit from the tank overflow. Have no HW/CW tee valve? If so you need to open it Defo no upstand bleed?

    Gravity H/w airlock problem..

Who is this tamz guy? If you can access your boiler drain valve, connect a garden hose to it and water will push air out of primary circuit into f&e tank.

3 amp fuse blown twice, is it the pump?

Short circuits are normally located by visual inspection; localised damage due to burning or melting. Reconnect pump and disconnect MV white and orange wires from wiring centre. Switch on HW, boiler will be driven from cylinder stat demand only.

    Gravity H/w airlock problem..

... "Water comes from the hot tap but is just cold!" If you suspect air in the hot water primary circuit have you tried to bleed it? Is there an upstand bleed on the flow from the boiler as it enters the cylinder? What type of valve controls the HW and CH tee? What happens to the HW with...

3 amp fuse blown twice, is it the pump?

A blown fuse is caused by too much current being drawn by a fault in the cable or a device or a connection. Check one device at a time. If you supect a pump fault and are competent working with mains electricity, disconnect the live supply to the pump (as has been suggested) at the wiring...

    ignition failure

.... "What I was really asking is whether pumps can be serviced or is it a case of replacing them when they break down." Other than bleeding there is no servicing possible with a pump. For the enthusiast engineer who would remove and fit a pump him/herself it may well be a practical...

Heating needs to be on to heat hot water

What happens to the pipework either side of the pump? One side is the hot water flow from the boiler. The other side should go to a tee; one side of this to the hot water cylinder and the other side of the tee to the rads. Try to find the tee; is there a motorised valve located on it? ...

    Clanking Boiler

chad, bleed fitment should be at a high point on the HW circuit; ie flow to HW coil as it enters the cylinder (there are already rad bleeds on the high point of the CH circuit. ... hear a ticking of bubbles. Are you bleeding with system running? System must be off to allow air to separate...

Boiler on every 55 seconds and some lukewarm rads

OK so boiler is shutting itself down although boiler control stat is set to max. System and pump are bled, pump is good and up full speed, all rads are open and lockshields not too restrictive; try shutting off bypass. Heat exchanger may be furred up or boiler control stat defective...

Boiler on every 55 seconds and some lukewarm rads

Firstly you will need to get the boiler running for longer than 55 secs. Why is it shutting down? Is it losing the call from the room and/or cylinder stats or is it shutting itself down? Is the problem boiler or external control? Make sure boiler control stat is set to max. Is there a...

    Clanking Boiler

Don't drain water from boiler a little at a time; it needs a constant through put of water to pull the air through. Just make sure water is flowing into system at a greater rate than it is flowing out otherwise you will introduce air. If you are handy you can fit bleed valve as you describe...

Ideal Classic tripping on thermal cut out

Further to namsag's excellent advice, problem could be boiler overheating due to circulation fault. Pump fault; too slow, no water in F&E tank, air or sludge in system.

    Clanking Boiler

Most domestic pumps have three speed rotating dial at the terminal end. Switch it round to max. If you still suspect air in the hot water circuit and you have no upstand bleed valve, look for a drain valve on the boiler. With the F&E tank ballcock still feeding in water and the motorised...

No Heating Downstairs Following A British Gas Visit

dave, most domestic circulators have three speeds, selected from a rotating dial at one end near the power supply cable. Try it on max. Don't see why downstairs rads are cool when upstairs are hot if they are on the same rad circuit controlled from the same motorised valve. Do they have...

No Heating Downstairs Following A British Gas Visit

Scalding water - was there already a cylinder stat fitted? What temp is it set to? Set it to 55 degrees. Do you have two heating zones, upstairs and downstairs? One or two room/hall stats? Has the pump speed been turned down? Speed it up to pull heat away from the boiler.
