    Under plinth heater wiring

Thanks all - the problem is now sorted out. Turns out that we were being total idiots and hadn't taken a panel off the front of the machine which meant that it just instantly overheated. Cheers to whoever said "why not?" !!

    Under plinth heater wiring

Thanks for the speedy responses. It didn't entirely not work, rather, it came on for about 10 seconds and then went off. I think the washing machine is on it's own loop, and the heater is 1Kw or 2Kw on boost. So it would be those two things and nothing else. Does it look like the...

    Under plinth heater wiring

Hi all, Any advice on this would be much appreciated! I'm currently having a new kitchen fitted (nearly finished now) and have had a complete re-wire done. I have isolation switches for dishwasher/washing machine/lights/ oven etc etc on a board that looks like nasa as you walk into the...

Box guttering - where to buy?

I'm trying to order online some box guttering - box guttering specifically because i'm having an extension on a boundry wall, so i can't have standard gutter overhanging my neighbour's garden. It seems to be more of a specialist thing than i'd realised because i'm struggling to find any that...

    Quick underfloor heating isolator question

I'm asking on here because i need to order it now and can't get through to him! I know it def wasn't a separate fuse and def not rcb either. Surely these things are standard for underfloor heating kits? Why can i not find one to order???

    Quick underfloor heating isolator question

I had bought a fan isolator switch to use for underfloor heating but my spark said it wasn't suitable and that i needed to get a different one. Now i'm ordering it but can't remember what he said - could it have been a dual core isolator (as opposed to 3 core for the extractor isolator?)? Can...

    wet room bonding

Oh yes, it's been notified. Do the council get you to pay for this independent electrician? So why do people talk of getting an electrician in to issue the certificate if it is the council that sort that out? Or is it that there are two ways of going about getting it signed off? For the...

    wet room bonding

I've had building control out to see it, but the guy seemed to just not want to get involved with anything electrical when i was asking questions, the attitude basically being "get your electrician to sort it all out". Will building regs not sign off electrical stuff themselves? Do they...

    wet room bonding

We don't have rcds right now but we will be replacing the consumer unit in June and so will be cracking from then on. The question then becomes what do we do in the mean time? What do you mean by extraneous pipework?

    wet room bonding

I'm having a wetroom installed as an en-suite to an upstairs bathroom, are there any Part P's out there to advise as to how the earth bonding for lights/pipes etc should be carried out ? My builder is saying that it should be 4.5mm earth wire, linked to everything and taken back to the "main...

Tiling over a wet room shower tray

Dextrous, you are being very helpful in all my posts it seems! Thanks very much, that's really good advice and i think that'll give me the look i want. :D

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

As i've said, i did get the labour cost in writing and have all work itemised. I did take on the "risk" of covering the cost of materials because i thought that my builder would tell me how much he really thought the materials would be. He has so little to gain by doing this - no financial...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

To be honest it didn't occur to me that it would be necessary to get his estimated materials cost in writing as i wouldn't surely under normal circs expect my builder to indemnify against over spend? Is this how i should do it next time around?

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

And just to respond to nosealls "convoluted and over complicated" point. I don't understand why you'd think that (or why you'd assume i didn't draw up a specification either?). I agree that i maybe stick my nose into the process rather alot if that is what you suspect? This is due to having...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

I did do exactly that. I'd found a guy who came really highly recommended, who's prices were reasonable and who included materials in his set price, which i was most comfortable with. I had him booked in for a specific date which i checked one week before hand, and then on the day he didn't turn...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

lol! good god i'm ignorant, i didn't know that builders merchants did that sort of thing! i guess it just works quite nicely as a sales pitch for a builder to show a customer the discounted rates he gets on the "full prices"... but it just means nothing if the full rates are 135% of...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

Just to add, my builder is perfectly happy to go through all the invoices and discuss them with me - and i can clearly see the discounts that he recieves, which he then passes on fully to me. Even with this though it seems expensive. Basically, i don't have a problem with my builder at all...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

Basically, the work being done is adding a 2.5m x 1.5m en-suite wetroom into the corner of a bedroom. Services are travelling accross a 3.5m bedroom to get there, and there is an extra bit of stud partition to be built, around 2.5m long, 2.5m height. I'm providing all fittings including...

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

Oh yeah, and i'm the moron as the customer who has to cover the cost of these materials! Builder says that non average his discount over all products is about 15% but i'm still thinking that it's expensive even with those reductions. Any one else? The more thoughts the better!

Thoughts on prices at Travis Perkins

My builder is passing invoices on to me from travis perkins and they seem hugely expensive. He's kicking up a fuss about me purchasing stuff through screwfix though. The one thing a have been able to compare was a roll of twin and earth which was less than half the price at screwfix. Can...
