    Downlighters failing

I have eight GU5.3 downlighters with individual transformers in a room about 4m x 6m. The lights are fairly standard types with the round wire clips to hold the bulbs in. They’ve been fine for ten years but recently started failing. I’ve replaced two transformers but now two more bulbs have...

Ariston boiler - identification and fault finding

Thanks everyone, apologies for not replying earlier, but threatening to withhold the rent finally got a Gas Safe Register man round and all working now. Have told all the flat mates to leave the boiler alone and just use the timer/controller to manage the system.

Ariston boiler - identification and fault finding

Update to this. The landlord has sent three different engineers. The first two said "yeah, your pressure's too low mate", then left. The latest guy changed a part but I don't know what. It still seems to be a bit hit or miss. Specific questions though: Should the pressure drop to zero when the...

Ariston boiler - identification and fault finding

Hi, My son at university has moved into a rented flat. The heating and hot water has been working sporadically and they are waiting for the landlord to come and sort it. I had a look yesterday and would appreciate help in clarifying what kind of system this is and how to use it efficiently...

    Enlarging hob cutout in situ

Thanks both. I used the router to make the first cut but didn't have a bit long enough to go right through 38mm, but anyway it gave me a lovely straight edge with no chipping of the surface. Then I went carefully along with the jigsaw trimming the bottom 10mm or so of the worktop. I used a batten...

    Enlarging hob cutout in situ

Hi, looking for advice here. I’m changing the hob and have discovered the new job needs the cutout to be 5mm wider. Luckily there is about 8mm overhang on the left side of the existing cutout before the end panel of the next unit so I’d like to enlarge the existing hole by 5mm all along the left...

    Baumatic timer module

hi, I have a Baumatic B724SS-A double oven and the timer module has gone faulty. It stopped working, with the display completely blank, and in that state disabled the oven entirely. I switched off the mains, took the oven out and checked the look of the connections etc and everything seemed...

    LG washing machine bearing removal

OK, now building it up. The bearing seal has a spring coiled round one side, and on the other face there is a sort of flexible lip round the outer edge and another on the inner edge. Can anyone help with which side faces the bearing?

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Hey Fender, thanks for your tips and encouragement. After a couple of hours tonight alternately heating, hammering and dremelling a little piece chipped off, then a couple more blows and out it popped. You can see the state of it. Ill give it all a good clean and rebuild it all tomorrow. Now...

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Hi again, no I don't know anyone who has one, but not really sure what I'm looking for. I've had a quick look online but can't see exactly what would do the job. Would it grip enough just on the concave surface of the outer rac, or would it have sharp enough "claws" to just get behind the back...

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Struggling now. spent a while last night alternately heating and bashing at the inner bearing but no joy. I've also attacked it with the Dremel as in this pic. The problem is there's only the outer race left of it, so only the smallest of edges to hammer at going through from the other side -...

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Brilliant Fender, thanks. Heat gun on the small outer bearing housing for a few minutes, then bashed through from the inside again with the socket extension and out it popped, as if to say "What was all the hammering for?" now for the harder bit, the remnants of the outer race of the inner bearing.

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Thanks rocks Ok I'll try the dremel method. I had a look for rear tub and seems difficult to get for this model, and similar ones seem more than half way to a new machine. I think I've got till the weekend or it'll be a trip to the retail park.

    LG washing machine bearing removal

OK, here's some pics. I've had WD40 soaking in for a few hours but still no joy. The first one shows just after removing the seal, (before I got the hammer out)

    LG washing machine bearing removal

Hi, I'm changing the bearings on my machine as the inner bearing had collapsed. I'm having trouble getting the old ones out. I'm left with the outer race of the larger inner bearing, and the whole of the smaller outer bearing. I've been hammering away at the outer one through from the inside...

    bonding to chrome water pipe

I've discovered I have no bonding to gas and water mains. I have run 10mm cable from gas meter to main earth and connected both ends. I've now run the cable to the water supply pipe next to the stop cock. The stop cock and subsequent pipes are chrome. Is it ok to bond to the chrome section or...
