    you can buy cold patching tarmac in small bags from builders merchants. cut back the areas to get a neat line and then the tarmac is placed in the area and flatten down and compressed to get the finish. Or use some black dyed mortar, but it will fade over time.

    get a decenet weed fabric such as plantex. Apply weedkiller to teh area. cover the area with the fabric and lap it all joints. cover with stones, minimum of 3 inches. Job done

    if youre bedding teh salbs on mortar then lay them first. if youre just going to lay them on the soil, then its easier to lay the lawn first and then put the slabs down and cut around the turf.
