Looking for a specific switch type-contact only when touched

Hi all, As the title says, I'm looking to find out if a specific type of wall switch/button is available. I need one that only completes the circuit when the button is pressed, as soon as it is let go the circuit should break again. I have seen dimmer switches that mechanically appear to...

Cutting groove in sawn 2 by 4

I would agree if I was simply adding a feed point A to point B, but if I just want to take a feed off a section of pre-existing cable it would be a different matter. I can position the grooves in the top of the joists as easily holes drilled through the joists (if not easier due to drill...

Cutting groove in sawn 2 by 4

Well explained, I can't argue with any of that! Its not just repairs I am thinking of though, also possible upgrades. Its the way I like to do these things, I find its worth making the effort, especially when I have to route the cable some way, so might as well think it through and do it in...

Cutting groove in sawn 2 by 4

Why is that out of interest? At the moment the frame is built (so under the joists would be a difficulty) but the boards arent down, my idea is that buy laying the wires across the top of the joists its building in as much ease of serviceability as possible (on the off chance I have to...

Cutting groove in sawn 2 by 4

That is definitely reasonable method, although I dismissed it initially as I've got 20+ grooves to cut so was looking for a quicker solution. Also a V-cut will have to be much deeper in order to accommodate the cross section of the cabling.

Cutting groove in sawn 2 by 4

Hi All, I'm looking for a bit of advice on the best way to go about cutting a groove in some timber, similar to that shown in the sketch below (exact profile is not relevant - its just a path to run cable through). The timber represents the joists in the frame I have built to lay decking...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Will do, I think I had read somewhere about watering every day for a week then easing back. I had decking in mind for a few reasons, one being that I like the feel of wood, and with the right stain I think it can add warmth to a garden that a stone patio can't. Its far less heavy work to...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Yeah I'm really pleased with how its looking, can't wait to get the decking down outside the backdoor and start being able to use it! That's good news, I'm sure once its cut it'll be almost unnoticeable anyway. I've been watering a total of 50 minutes a day 20 in the early morning 10 late...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Some great tips still coming! Thought I'd add a little update as its been down for a week. All in all I'm pretty pleased, it for the most part seems to be growing well and most of the joins seem to have merged. I only have a couple of concerns which I would be interested in your...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Thanks for the words of encouragement lasors, its been a day of hard work in some intense heat! The soil was drying out, but for it to have reached the stage where it would crumble down to a nice rakeable tilth I think would have taken days. We left it until late afternoon, periodically...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Very impressive work, got a high standard to aim for now! Thought I'd post up an update of the progress. Things were all going very well as we got to Monday afternoon. By that stage we had managed to turn all the patio base and rake out as many stones as possible. Once the surrounding flower...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Wow, thanks to you both for taking the time to give such in depth advice. I've always been an advocate of the 'buy cheap, buy twice' and 'do a job properly and do it once' philosophy's. However I am also wary of the fact that a lot of people like to advise as though the only way to do things is...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

I got some more time yesterday evening to clear the patio further and see what I will be working with: My plan is to 1) Dig out all the sand/concrete/stone pebble mix - how critical is it to get all of this out? 2) Level the ground as much as possible 3) Add some topsoil to help...

Replacing Paving with Turf/Lawn - Ground Prep

Hi All, This is my first post to DIYnot. My girlfriend and I have just bought our first property. For the most part its in fairly good condition, just tatty and in need of a bit of an update. Some of our biggest tasks will be some addition of power sockets and light switches, relocation of a...
