    Boiler earth size.

Hi I have noticed that my boiler earth maybe isn't as big as it should be. It's maybe 6mm? and should be 10mm? Should I replace this with larger ca ble? I will be getting some electrical work done soon on extension soon and wanted to do as much as possible myself first and get it ship shape...

Retaining wall block and brick with coping?

Right I've mocked up the block and brick. The width of the blocks is 100mm the brick about 75mm? To be able to run a course of headers I would need to leave a cavity gap of about 60mm. Should I fill this with cement as I go to keep it solid? Do I need to put some drain weeps in somewhere...

Retaining wall block and brick with coping?

Great thanks. Might as well build the wall solid without a cavity then. I have some wall ties lying around do I just position them at a sharp angle so they don't stick out . Header course would be good and solid to I will try for that to.

Retaining wall block and brick with coping?

Hi Shortly I hope to begin my retaining garden wall. It will be arounf 7m long and 1m high. I have dug the founds and have everything ready to pour base. I have some lovely old hand made bricks I was wanting to use on the face of the wall. I don't have enough to do a traditional 9 inch wall...

Using existing land drain clay pipe for new patio drainage

That junction looks interesting. The clay pipe is 3 inches I think so that's just under 80mm. Do you think it will work? Worth a punt i reckon! Yes streams nearby. I live on a hill top so everything flows down toward the river about 300 metres away.

    Lighting cable run for extension

Would you aim for the steel beam in middle and put some galvanised cable around it or just clip it to edge of the rafter?

Using existing land drain clay pipe for new patio drainage

Hi I have dug some foundations for a retaining wall for a new patio area. I have found an existing field drain I was hoping to use as it still drains well. When digging the footings part of the field drain clay pipe has been removed for the footing. I need to somehow reuse this pipe to drain...

    Lighting cable run for extension

Hi I am planning on running some cables to extend the lighting circuit into my extension. Once the ceiling is boarded I will probably add led down lights but while I am working temporarily will add an LED batten type light. I will add 100mm PIR insualtioin between the trusses and then overboard...

    Retaining wall with foundation blocks

Hi I am after some opinions on suitable foundation for a retaining wall for this area I was originally going to go for a foundation similar to a house but not as deep. Plan is using block and brick with wall ties every course solid ( no cavity). Talking to a builder friend he said just use...

    more insulation on new extension

Ok. More reading if anyone else is having this issue would suggest that a bit of adhesive on some foil insulation board stuck straight to wall first - just to hold it ,taping all joins and THEN adding battens that drill through the board straight to wall (maybe hammer fixings). The battens can...

    more insulation on new extension

So plan is... Dot and dab 50mm pir board to block wall. Use 2x4 inch timbers every 400mm. Tape pir board edges to timber. Attach 12.5mm plaster board onto battens with cut outs for sockets lining up with 2 x 4 studs (i think 2 x4 will be sufficient to get a galvanised back box secure). Does...

    more insulation on new extension

"Not a lot of many people know that "(said in Michael Cane voice) well my bricky didn't. What about just putting insulation straight onto block and butting some 6 "x 2 "or something similar vertically on the areas I am mounting sockets etc so they get a solid fix and run cables down the timber...

    more insulation on new extension

Hi Yes. It's built with reclaimed brick as outside leaf with 75mm mineral insulation in. Run cables along the wall do you mean leave a gap at top or bottom of boards? The sockets need to be cut out of insulation board then? Could i dab pir insulation on block then batten the pir board and...

    more insulation on new extension

Probably worth mentioning that the floor is concrete sub floor with celotex, pipes and screed so plumbing and electric will have to drop down from ceiling .

    more insulation on new extension

Hi All I am in the process of getting a new extension built. The plans specified block and brick with 100mm cavity. I asked the builder to reuse some bricks I had - this has resulted in around a 75mm cavity as the bricks are bigger than metric ones and the founds had trench blocks to start...

Adding underfloor heating to existing boiler circuit

Hi Hoping someone can keep me right with a couple of things? I was going to branch off existing CH flow and return and put a 2 port valve on the flow linked to clock and triggered off a thermostat? Will the wiring work ok still I have a honeywell stc9400c can I just add some extra connector...

Adding underfloor heating to existing boiler circuit

I think what I said is right. Google search found the below picture. I just need to have more wiring for the new two port valve I am going to need. Can anyone see a problem having 4 motorised valves on the system wiring?

Adding underfloor heating to existing boiler circuit

Hi I am about to add underfloor heating to an extension that is being built. It's about 60m2. I have a gravity fed vented system with an S plan plus design so three two port valves for upstairs, downstairs and hot water all called for by thermostats or clock. When the manifold arrives I am...

Using old Engineering bricks for pathway and dwarf wall

Right. The extension is going up using the old bricks. As stated they were originally but using lime. Builder is reusing on cavity wall using sand cement. Will this be OK. I am a bit worried about them cracking in frost etc as water can't escape or am I worrying too much?! Thanks
