What's The Right Way To Finish Ceiling Edges?

Hi Folks I've just about removed all my tiles and backer board from our bathroom. The corners around the ceiling look like this:- So that's just a pretty thin layer of lath and plaster there at the moment, with the freezing cold attic above it. I'm planning to get thick insulated backer...

Removing Old Backer Board And Adding New - What About The Holes?

Thanks for your reply - I've no idea if its a problem tbh, I was just wondering. Do you think it is / have you removed old boards and placed new ones in the same brick work? Just looking for direction really as I appreciate these boards, once fixed, will be supporting the tile weight.

Removing Old Backer Board And Adding New - What About The Holes?

Hi folks I am currently removing old tiles and with the backer board to follow. My plan is to get some thicker 50mm XPS multi boards to replace them before retiling. However, I'm just thinking - What about all the holes which will be left in the brick work by the removed old mechanical...

Rear Exit Toilet - Can You Offset With Sink Drainage?

Hi Folks Currently redoing our bathroom. We currently have a concealed toilet unit which directly backs on to what is a raised rear soil waste exit, with our sink to the right of that. What I am wondering is if something exists which would allow me to switch the toilet and sink positions...

Cut Cast Iron Elbow To 40mm Waste Pipe Connection

Yup, looks like it - The pipe was otherwise fine. Would be interesting to know how that connection was done back in the day. I just pulled and twisted at it but it came easily. It has sheared though, so there must have been some kind of connection - don't know if would have just been soldered...

Cut Cast Iron Elbow To 40mm Waste Pipe Connection

Just adding the current state of play here in case anyone else stumbled into this thread having similar problems. Here's the original picture of the lead waste pipe under the bath:- It cut no problem with a basic reciprocating saw metal blade. I cut it at the join for the sink waste and...

Back to The Brickwork Or Layer Plaster Back Up?

Thanks. I'm not sure if it would specifically need to be insulated plasterboard as that wall is internal and backs on to a bedroom. Not sure if it does anything harm though? Here's a picture of the wall which does face the outside (you can just see where I've knocked the tiles off on the right...

Back to The Brickwork Or Layer Plaster Back Up?

The lath and plaster was another wall. This one has brick behind the plaster - You can see some brick in the top right hand corner where the plaster has fully come away. Otherwise that first keyed coat is pretty solid across the rest of the wall.

Back to The Brickwork Or Layer Plaster Back Up?

Hi Folks I'm redoing our upstairs bathroom and got some good advice last week re what I believe is a lath and plaster wall. Here's another wall in the bathroom:- This time when I was removing the tiles they came off for the most part with the second coat of plaster. You can see for the most...

Is It Good Practice / Make Sense To Fit Isolation Valves Between Floors?

Thanks Robin You're right about those elbows - I've no idea why they were in place. Here's a photo of the original setup before I removed the tees for the bath tap and shower:- So you can just about make out at the bottom that it was always like that. Maybe just to create space away from the...

Is It Good Practice / Make Sense To Fit Isolation Valves Between Floors?

I agree re it being at the cost of an additional potential failure point. However, if I don't add anything, I leave that piping as per the picture in an unreachable position before any first floor isolation points. The funny thing is until I opened up the under bath can of worms this was always...

What Do I Have Behind My Tiles Here?

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply - I've heard of that SBR stuff because I used to watch quite a few videos from a scouse plaster guy and he was always talking about using it! I'm not sure re the board being the tile adhesive though - If you look at that first picture I posted and about half way...

What Do I Have Behind My Tiles Here?

Yeah, 1930s I think. The plaster is pretty much well in place on the wall but there is a bit which has come away in a line above the door frame, so I'm guessing it is lath and plaster. Having said that, it isn't sounding particularly hollow. But it's definitely not structural as it's only about...

What Do I Have Behind My Tiles Here?

Sorry that was a pretty bad, blurry image. I took another one:- I think there's another thread on here with something similar and someone said it was horse hair?

What Do I Have Behind My Tiles Here?

Thanks. I don't know if you can see from the photo but the wall seems pretty uneven - there are bits where that thin board seems have a bit of a hollow behind it, so I guess it was pretty uneven when that board was initially applied. I was thinking it would be pva mixes, then replaster to level...

What Do I Have Behind My Tiles Here?

Hi folks I'm currently removing tiles from our bathroom, which quite likely hasn't been touched in decades! I'm just wondering what I have here:- And whether I need to keep going or stop here and have it re-finished over the top? You'll see to the right that there does seem to have been some...

What Type Of Push Fit Connector Is This?

As I was saying it turned out I did just have speedfit super seal inserts. They were just stuck in place and had some brown staining past the last o-ring! It's a good idea to try things like you've done though - so much contradictory advice re these push fittings. Not sure how much is from old...

Is It Good Practice / Make Sense To Fit Isolation Valves Between Floors?

Hi Folks I'm in the process now of redoing the bathroom, as I needed to remove some lead waste piping, which has lead to removing the bath, etc. My question now - whilst everything is out / capped - is whether I should fit some isolation valves in our kitchen below? The pipes are boxed in but...

What Type Of Push Fit Connector Is This?

Turned out they were just the super seal inserts - I had removed the tee leading to the cold water 22m copper before reassembling and had a closer look / pulled the insert out. For some reason they were brown stained before the first seal o-ring which was what made me think it was copper insert...

What Type Of Push Fit Connector Is This?

Hey great, thanks! I googled that and exact same symbol on this:- https://www.screwfix.com/p/jg-speedfit-superseal-plastic-push-fit-pipe-inserts-15mm-10-pack/69329?tc=JU9 So it's not a "SP" just a squiggly SF logo! What an idiot I am... Cheers.
